Thousands Thou-sands thronged the streets yesterday! to greet Ygnacio Bonillas, Mexican ambassador to (he United Slates, who has announced his Avilllngness to become be-come the presidential candidate of the civilian parly in the general elections July 11. The demonstration was considered con-sidered as a first real presidential campaign gathering and as marking the climax of the preliminary canvass. Newspaper comment and published interviews with other candidates and government officials indicate the pres-idontail pres-idontail fight has narrowed down ,to Bonillas and Alvaro Dbregon, with partisans par-tisans of Pablo Gopzales waging a more or less extensive camapign. Obregon on Tour General Obregon has been louring the country and s leaking for morej than for months, wlille Gonzales hasi contented himself wi th the formation I of political clubs and .the distribution! of campaign literature. The candidates al( declare for tho, maintenance of Mexican national ' rights, pacification otthe country and other generalities. "Platforms, how-! over, are virtually negligible, sinccthej campaign in being wged on personal-) itlcs. Obrogon's supporters declare that the Carranza Administration is j opposing l ho general's candidacy andi is using its resources to secure the election of Bonillas.- These charges, together with intimations that Bonillas Bonil-las is ineligible for the presidency and that he Is not a Mexican citizen have been denied by civilian party leaders and government offhjials. Tho claim that he is tho candidate of tho prot-estants prot-estants has also been met with vehement vehe-ment denials. j Supports Carranza General Federico Montes, former; governor of Guanajuato, who was the leading spirit in tho rlecenl conference here of sixteen slat governors, has declared the sole purpose of that conference con-ference was to guarantee free and orderly or-derly elections. General Montes, who is a strong administration supporter, recently declared the" .governors' conference con-ference showed the state governments were strongly allgnet with the Carranza Car-ranza administration -and determined to carry out Its policies which, he said, had been succqssful. The belief expressed early in the campaign that the present administration administra-tion would hold ovor has virtually disappeared dis-appeared since entire, faith has been placed in President Garranza's reiterated reiter-ated declarations thai; he will not hold office a single day aft'or the expiration of his term. It is hc common belief here, however, that (ho coming elections elec-tions will not bring njtorationa in government gov-ernment nor in the policies followed by Carranza. |
