Tho secretary supplemented this with a letter, published pub-lished today in which the theory of tho awards was explained. Mr. Daniels dwelt at length on the reasons for awarding distinguished I service medals to the commanders of I ton of the eleven American warshipr. and transports sunk by submarines and mines during tho war. Ho declared de-clared that "when wo shall have forgotten for-gotten the distinguished and honorable honor-able service of able and devoted officers offi-cers nshore, the splendid courage of tho men who met tho shock of the submarine stillottoes unafraid will remain re-main as a living glory and an honorable honor-able incentive to future naval heroes." nn |
