Show Berger Defeats Fusion Candidate MILWAUKEE, Wis.. Dec. 20 Victor Vic-tor L. Dersier. Socialist, was todav ugain representative-elect from the fifth congressional district, having defeated de-feated Henry H Bodenstab, fusion candidate, by a majority of 4.806 in yesterday's special election The complete unofficial vote compiled com-piled today gave Berger 24,367 and Bodenstab 19.561 In the election of 191S, Berger received a plurality of 5,ou7 in a three sided contest, the Republicans Re-publicans and Democrats having candidates candi-dates in the field. After the result of yesterday's election elec-tion was known, Berger issued a state uient in which he said: "1 don t know whether the house will seat me and I care little if only the Continued fight for my seat will furnish the occasion to awaken the common people of the United States, especially the irorking class, to a realization of the gieat dangers before us and the immense duties that we must fulfill if modern civilization is to continue, or even survive." CHICAGO, Dec. 19. Victor Berger's re-election to congress was termed a triumph in a statement tonight lrom 'national headquarters of the-Socialist party which declared that as a resuk of the election congress Is on trial' Berger's re-election was not only a indication of Berger but also of So cialism, the statement said, and a "challenge to those reactionary agents of capitalism who would stifle the I voice of the working class protest and who would muzzle minority opinions." 00 |
