President Samuel G. Dye of the Ocden stake was the chief speaker at the meeting Mayor l 5. Browning, president of the quonim, presided and .Tames Pin gree conducted the meeting which was largely attended by members of the organization. The meeting opened b sinking "Now Let Us Rejoice in the Pay of Salvation." and prayer h Elder El-der John McQuarrie. A number of business matters, relative to the work I of the quorum were attended to after i which President Dye delivered his address. ad-dress. Watchmen In Zion j In his opening remarks. President Dye said he felt ery keenly the im-j im-j portance of the office of high priest in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints They had been called to be as watchmen in Zion. or to use an i illustration, ' Home Guards" of the church It was their special opportunity oppor-tunity lo watch over the church at I home and this he said, applies to every individual member of the quorum. Every man a supposed to be a minute man( ready at all times to defend the principles of the gospel of Christ. The speaker said he had read a good deal of the current history of the world of late and found that one of i the forces at work was the appeal to j the reason of man. It was right, he I said, that every man should be able j to give a reason for his convictions. ,but he believed it was better and safer ! to walk with faith than bv reason. The great lesson for man to learn loday. he said, is to believe in and trust in God. The just shall live by faith and not by reason or knowledge Knowledge has been withheld because premature knowledge would destroy men We must walk by faith because the power of faith is greater than the power of reason and as an illustration the speaker referred to the raising of the daughter of Jarius a.s recorded in th BCrlptUres. This incident, he said, was testified to by three witnesses and had come down to us unchanged through a storm of doubt, reason and higher criticism and yet there are many he was afraid would laugh at the testimony of faith in Christ. The lesson for man is to (rust in t'hrist and accept testimonies concerning con-cerning him. While it Is essential that man must reason to elevate him above the lower animals, il was not right for man to set up his reason and intelli-uenc- a-ainst that w hi. h lod has spoken While it is proper to be obedient, obed-ient, the speaker said he was afraid I we did not all possess ihe power to obey. As an illustration the speaker said he might have a desire to fly in the air and yet lack the power to rise above the earth. Accompanied with our desires must be efforts put forth by ,ihe individual ' Aro vrwi aMitn i . I - . ituiiiuis ii sa.v no, to temptation, and. are you able to say yes. when you should say yesj?" the ; speaker asked. This will solve all the problems of life, if we ir.- able lo yield obedience to the laws of the gos-pel gos-pel of Christ, it is not possible for us (o enjoy health and vigor of man-I man-I hood unless we are determined to obey the laws of health and it is not possible for man to violate the principles prin-ciples of righteousness and then enjoy en-joy the blessings that come from God. the speaker declared. The mere desire de-sire to do good is not sufficient, we l can only do the things we are pr-! pr-! pared to do and blessings will not! comes to us unless we live consistent i lives. President Dye said he believed in forming habits, ood habils, such as prayer and told how Christ had formed the habit of prayer, it being recorded! jof him that "Jesus went oul to pray I las was his custom." As high priests we ought lo be able and have power and strength enough to pray and keep! the Sabbath day holy No man can possibly misunderstand what is required of us on the Sabbath : day, the speaker Raid, when God has ipalnly said, we must keep the day ; holy. H we understand the meaning ,of the word "holy" we shall know and fully understand what is required of ! us on the Sabbath day. I The speaker advised allegiance to I i the constitution of (he United States because it was Inspired of God and 1 lis our duly and sworn obligation to. defend It against all enemies bolh for- I eign and domestic. It w.,s the duty Of the members of the church to see that men knew or the word of 'the Lord and when all men obey word of the Ixrd this country would be safe1 i from nil enemies. The problems of the world cannot, be .solved until the principles oi the gospel of Christ nr.- applied to those1 problems and there will never bo peace In the world until t'hrist is ac- knowledged as the administrator of peace to the world. When we lcam thai all men are brothers, l hen we may! expect lo sec that which has been spoken by all prophet |
