Show POEM Hf A SOLDIER v , This patriotic poem was presented to Mrs. A. W. Putnam by the writer as a little memento of his happy recreation recrea-tion in Ogden. He was born in Prussia, Prus-sia, enlisted in Chicago and is now looking forward to a great adventure beyond the sea. A Man's Dream. Let me live, oh mighty master, Such a life a man should know, Tasting triumph and disaster; Joy, and not too much of woe. Let me run the gamut over, Let me fight, and love, and laugh. And when I'm beneath the clover, Let this be my epitaph: Here lies one who took his chances, In the busy world of men, Battled luck and circumstances, Fought and fell, and fought again. Won sometimes, but did no crowing, Lost sometimes, but did not wall, Took his beating, kept on going, Never let his courage fail. He was fallable and human Therefore loved and understood; By his fellowman and woman, Whether good, or not so good. Kept h'is spirit undiminished, Never laid down on a friend; Played the game till It was finished, Lived a sportsman to the end. Private Vlgdon, Battery "E" 83rd Reg. F. A. oo |
