Show oo REINDEER HERD IS TO BE TRANSFERRED ST. JOHN'S, N. F., July 30. After twelve years of experimenting in the raising of Lapland reindcor in northern north-ern Newfoundland, Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell, tho Labrador medical mis-jslonary, mis-jslonary, has decided to transfer his herd to Canadian' Labrador. An effort will bo mado there to introduce u strain of native caribou blood Into the herd which has deteriorated through years of inbreeding. Dr. Grenfell has long hold the theory that tho caribou might bo inbred with reindeer to produce an highly efficient draft animal, suitable for use along tho north coast. He was unable to give this thoory a thorough test in Newfoundland. New-foundland. By agreement with the government of the province of Quebec Increases in the herd may bo shipped back to New Foundland if the owner desires. Tho Grenfell herd consists of 300 animals, virtually tho eamo number landed by tho missionary twelve years ago at St. Anthony whon he .introduced .introduc-ed reindeer to this province. At one lime the, herd numbered 1200 but it-decreased it-decreased as it deteriorated from lack of now blood. Dr. Grenfell, who is now in the north country on missionary work, expects that- a government steamer will transport tho deer to their new feeding grounds this summer. |
