Investigation Investiga-tion by the senate judiciary sub-committee into the purchase of the Wash ington Times by Arthur Brisbane with the aid of money advanced by brewers, very likely will develop Into a general Inquiry into the activities of German propagandists In this country. This was indicated tonight by members mem-bers of the committee after information informa-tion obtained by the array Intelligence servico had been submitted to tho committee In executive session. Senators Sena-tors declined to discuss tho information, informa-tion, but announcement was made that Captain G. B. Lester of the army intelligence in-telligence service had been subpoenaed subpoen-aed to appear next Tuesday when the inquiry will begin. It is also understood that George Creel, chairman of the committee on public Information would be called. In further preparation for a general Inquiry the committee has asked E. Lowey Humes, former federal district attorney at Pittsburgh to furnish the committee with a digest of information informa-tion secured by the government as to the political activities of brewers as revealed by fedoral grand jury investigations investi-gations at Pittsburgh while a similar request also was sent to B. F. Looney, attorney general of Texas. A. Mitchell Palmer, alien property custodian, whose charges made in a speech in Harrisburg, Pa,, resulted in tho senate ordering the investigation, appeared before the committee today, but opening of the hearing was postponed post-poned because of the Illness of Alexander Alex-ander Konta, of New York, the principal princi-pal witness. |
