I t Purple Velvet House Gown. X ; While delivering these ideas, Miss n j Stevens wears a house gown of purple 1 : velvet. The straight front panel of I .' the gown widens at the bottom and is 1 j 'drawn towards the back wher it is knotted, and from which two long 1 j points extend in a train. A cape of 1 1 silver lace is lined with orchid chiffon I and falls from the rounded neck in 1 back, covering the arms, and is caught I u with the knot of velvet. I Among the fashionable folk who call rl i on the heroine is Mrs. Van Duzen, ffj played by Teresa Maxwell Conover, who wears a frock of brown satin and lace. The skirt is draped low in zouave zou-ave effect and there is a front panel of brown mesh lace threaded in gold. The bodice, which is made of laco in back and satin In front, fits the figure l .snugly and the waistline is defined by brown ribbon velvet. A string of brown wooden beads and a flat sailor hat complete the costume. Of Gray Cre.pe de Chine. Daisy Atherton, another caller, appears ap-pears In a charming frock of gray crepo de chine. The skirt is made . with four picot edged drapes, cut in 1- points, and it has a collarless bodice of gold laco, trimmed with nold tissue ribbon. The neck is cut straight across, back and front. Tho wide Mandarin sleeves are made of sheer silk crepo. With this is worn a flat hat of gray sheer silk crepe and silver 1 tissue trimmed with a narrow blue ribbon at the base of the low crown. The third caller, Ff oil lot Paget, appears ap-pears in black satin and white lace. This is a practical matron's gown, cut with a draped skirt and bodice and with wide skirt panels of lace front and back. In the second act, which takes place a year later,. Miss Stevens makes her entrance in a beige broadcloth cg,pe, draped over the left shoulder and a Tam o'Shanter in the same material, covered with a very wide harem chiffon chif-fon veil which reaches the hem of her cape when unfastened. When the cape is removed a lovely gown is revealed, made with a draped blue satin skirt and a long bodice of all-over brocade in gold, rose, blue and green which fastens in the back. Tho neck is low and round and the sleeves are long and very tight to the wrist. With Straight Tight Skirt. She Is followed by her companion, played by Frances Underwood, who is carrying the much -discussed child wrapped in a blanket. The companion wears an effective salmon pink satin dress in a lustrous finish. The skirt is put Ktraicht and ticht and there is an unusually long Russian blouse with points at the side. These points are bordered with paillettes and weighted with heavy bead tassels. The arm-holes arm-holes of the blouse are outlined with paillettes and the round neck Is finished fin-ished with a beaded bib. A satin sash is tied in a bow in front. The long tight sleeves are made of self-colored silk crepe. The three women callers of the first act reappear in the second act. Mrs. Conover wears' a striking frock of white net embroidered in black over a tight underskirt of black satin. The tunic skirt is bordered with a band of white net and black embroidery, and wide bands of the same material are .used for panels on the bodice. The vestee is of white net over white satin and the long net sleeves are trimmed with a row of black buttons from shoulder to wrist, A wide girdle of balck satin finishes the bodice. With this costume is worn a smart, black turban of braided satin trimmed high in back with a burnt ostrich feature fancy. A shoulder length stole of ermine er-mine and black and white striped satm slippers effectively finish this costume. Brown satin, cut in a one-side tunic overskirt and with a surplice bodice, is worn over an underdross of brown lace threaded in gold, by Miss Atherton. Miss Paget has a good style matron's dress of gray satin and sheer silk crepe, trimmed with circles of soutache braid, which head a satin fold on the crepe overskirt, tho wide, satin cuffs on the olbow crope sleeves and also trimmed the bodice. Incidentally, tho father of the child turns up in this act and insists on a marriage ceremony, but the advanced heroine clings to her theories and refuses re-fuses to give their child a regular, legal father. Evening Gowns. However, in tho third act she succumbs suc-cumbs to tho pleading of the man.
