Show I, Theatres AT THE ALHAMBRA. "America's Sweetheart" Is giving her share of herself this week to Ogden Og-den at tho Alhamhra theater and the crowds which have seen her are thoroughly enjoying her. Of course it's Mary who could it bo but Mary Mary Pickford, that's "Who. Mary comos now in "Amarilly of Clothes Lino Alley" and she registers the character of a "clothes Une alley" kid with rare success. She Is In lovo with Torry McGowan, a husky young Irish bucko who tends bar in their district but drinks soda water straight Gordon Gor-don Phillips, a "man about town" and a half-baked sculptor, sees Mary when ho and a crowd of his wasting friends go slumming and he tries to-bring her Into his environment of "bilcd" fronts and eau do cologne with a possible view of marrying her or satisfying his momentary whim. Of course tho attempt fails and the social experiment, as Gordon's parasitic para-sitic friends dub it, snows that diamonds dia-monds can't bo brought forth from the grime of Iho proletariat, nt least with the superficial gardening of plutocratic snobs. Then Amarilly goes back to Terry and ho is tho happiest Irish kid in town. Then the producers havo to startle the audience with a "five years after" sceno and show Mary and Terry, both McGowans now, and a good start of little McGowans. Torry Is working work-ing at tho court house and bidding fair to be an Irish politician. Manager Skinnor has a winner of a picture with this. AT THE ORPHEUM. "Alimony" is Manager Goss" early week offering at tho Orpheum and it has attracted no small amount of attention, at-tention, Tho pictures have filled a great function in America in graphic cally showing many brands of crime and another and hithorto unexploited field is reached In this picture called "Alimony." Briefly it shows how an unscrupulous unscrupu-lous attorney and an adventuress of a woman plot to break up the new marriage mar-riage of a loving couple to get a handsome hand-some 'settlement". ostensibly for tho wronged wlfo, but It would be a safo bet to say for the attorney and Ills partner. Anyway thoy are fooled for, as the poets say, love trlu.mpha, and a third member of the family which makes his debut wtlds their love into an unbreakable bond. This pioluro is interesting because it shows up a condition, which it Is generally accepted, is pretty common in the big cities. Crime ha.s many faces and forms yet noveity still seems to go hand In hand with It. The human race has seen most every kind, and read .about the others, but developing conditions condi-tions bring about evolution of a novel nature. The alimony frame-up as ox-plained ox-plained by this film at the Orpheum is one of these. It ought to be seen for that reason and for anothor it is a gripping story. oo |
