Show Erasing Father Time's Marks BY EDNA EGAN. jF course every woman will not m admit it, it is true, nevorthe-less, nevorthe-less, that all women have a feeling of regret when they rcalizo that they are getting away from youth. This feeling Is natural, but it need not. be nurtured. There is much a woman can do to keep up with youth. There are many women who have realized this fact, and who are making a successful effort to keep young in mind, spirit and body, but you will also find a number of women who accept each birthday as a necessary neces-sary thing and live up to the pace Father Time sets for them. But ono must use commonsenso in one's effort There is nothing moro ridiculous than the woman of doubtful years who wears her skirts nine inches from the ground, who adopts bright colors, affects af-fects a youthful stylo of hair-dressing and who tries to cover up wrinkles with a heavy application of rouge and powder. The sensible way to keep up with youth is to give the body tho be3t kind of-'care. This means sufficient sleep, plenty of fresh air, exercise, wholesome food and a generous use of water, externally and Internally. A woman's hands are often an index in-dex to her age, especially if they show lack of care. As one advances in years, the skin is apt to become wrinkled unless it is sufficiently nourished nour-ished with cold cream. Of course, wrinkles are apt to come in time, but there is no uso encouraging premature ones. Every night the hands should bo encased in cosmotic gloves in which a paste is spread. The paste being made of ground barley, the white of an egg, a tcaspoonful of glycerin and one ounce of honey. Use soft gloves for the purpose, three or four sizes too large. Rip them open and spread the inside with the preparation. prep-aration. Then sew the ripped scam up. Do not neglect the nails. This advice ad-vice applies to old and young. Unsightly Un-sightly nails are disgusting and inexcusable. in-excusable. The use of a nailbrush, soap, water, a nailflle, an orange stick and a buffer will keep the nails in a presentable condition. Once tho habit of carmg for the nails is established It will be second nature to attend to the nails just as you attend to your faco and hands. If there aro any points in manicuring about which you are in doubt do not hesitate to write for help. From a hygienic as well as an esthetic standpoint, clean, well-cared-for nails arc necessary. Equally as important is the caro of the feet. Tho minute one is troubled with corns, callous spots, aching feet, etc, one is forced to walk incorrectly incorrect-ly and one is extremely unhappy, consequently con-sequently tho face takes on a weary expression and ono looks years older. The daily bath does much to keep tho feet comfortable and tho wearing of proper-fitting stockings and shoes docs more. If the feet are inclined to burn, bathe them In luke-warm salt water; in fact, never put them in extremely ex-tremely warm water. This makes them too tender. Always bo sure to dry them thoroughly. Failuro to do this sometimes causes the skin to break between the toes- If this should happen apply vaseline to the abrasions and sprinkle talcum or foot powder between the toes. If women would realize the importance impor-tance of exercise in keeping the body young and agile, there would be mpre older women on tennis courts, In swimming pools, on horseback, In row-boats row-boats 'and on long hikes. Without regular reg-ular exercise the joints become stiff, the blood docs not circulate freely, thereby keeping the skin well nourished nour-ished and, consequently, one acquires the tired, languid feeling that Is anything any-thing but an expression of youth. Tho exercise demonstrated is a splendid one for maintaining balance and poise. It also reduces tho hips and abdomen and relieves any tendoncy to constipation. constipa-tion. Unless one is very careful the shoulders arc sure to slope as one goes down the shady side of the hill of life. Of course, the exercises before mentioned will do much to prevent thiB. Another thing that will check the tendency is to place tho body against a wall, so that tho heels and shoulders aro forced to bo straight It sounds liko a simple procedure, but thero is much to be gained from it Along with this adopt lines that will conceal any tendency to roundness and will emphasize straight shoulders. Having an interest in current events and in young persons will do a great deal to keep ono young. Keep active, do something for others and put your mind in tho right running and you cannot fall to impress your intimate friends with tho successful way you "keep your age." |
