The important feature of the session ses-sion was the presentation by the committee of the platform and resolutions resolu-tions and its unanimous adoption by tho convention. Tho report of the platform plat-form and resolutions committee as j read by A. L. Thomas, chairman, and adopted, follows: "The Republicans of Salt Lake county, coun-ty, Utah, in regular convention assembled, as-sembled, believe that many hundreds of millions of dollars lost to our treasury treas-ury by the Wilson Democratic free trade law is so much burden taken from the back of tho foreigner and placed upon the back of the American. Ameri-can. Our country needs a protective tariff now, and will need it more after the war is over. "Resolved, That we protest on behalf be-half of an overburdened people against any increase of our state, county and city taxes, and we enter an emphatic protest against the unjust assessment of property in Salt Lake county, under which many thousands of homes and other forms of property havo been assessed as-sessed beyond their salable cash value. "We condemn the sham vote-getting practices of tho Democratic party in persistently declaring in their platforms plat-forms for a nonpartisan judiciary, and disregarding In every instance the platform declarations by making partisan par-tisan appointments only to fill vacancies. vacan-cies. "Resolved, That we unqualifiedly denounce de-nounce the demoralizing practice which it is said has crept into the present state executive administration, or requiring, as preliminary to an appointment, ap-pointment, the filing of a written resignation res-ignation of blank date by tho proposed propos-ed appointee. We denounce such a. practice as destructive of political and official manhood and Independent public pub-lic service. "Resolved, That wo favor tho enactment enact-ment of laws to benefit the condition of what are known as the laboring classes. We favor a revision of the workmen's compensation law to the end that we respectfully submit for the consideration of their fellow citizens citi-zens the following: "Resolved, That we reaffirm our devotion de-votion to the national Republican party par-ty and its principles and policies. We believe there was never greater need than now for the application of these principles and policies to the administration adminis-tration of the affairs of our government. govern-ment. "Resolved, That in answer to the demand de-mand that politics 'be adjourned' during dur-ing the war, we havo only to say thnt we favor such adjournment so far as it is necessary for all loyal citizens to unite in support of the government in its efforts to achieve triumphant victory vic-tory over Germany and her allies. We propose, however, as Republicans, to exercise our right to vote a Republican ticket, and to express our views freely and fearlessly with respect to. questions ques-tions of local and national importance. "Resolved, That wo again reaffirm our support of the Republican doctrine of a protective tariff. We believe a tariff tar-iff necessary to relieve tho financial burden now resting heavily upon our people. We arc unalterably opposed to the Democratic doctrine of raising revenue rev-enue by direct taxation only. "Resolved, That we glory In tho magnificent record of that great soldier sol-dier and American statesman, Theodore Theo-dore Roosevelt, and we regret that his clear vision was not followed in preparing pre-paring our country to meet the great burden of the present war. "Resolved, That we solemnly pledge the county and legislative tickets we have this day nominated to w'brk to tho end that the financial burden of tho people shall be reduced to a minimum, mini-mum, and the conduct of our public affairs placed upon a sound and conservative con-servative basis. "Resolved, That we congratulate our fellow citizens upon the golden promise of victory now coming to us from over the sea. We rejoice with them that in this great battle for liberty lib-erty and civilization our Utah boys aro playing well their part. We feel and know they will come back to us crowned with the laurels- of victory, having won fame for themselves and renown for their state and country. "Resolved, That we earnestly urge our fellow citizens to mako every sacrifice sac-rifice possible to aid our government in placing the new Liberty bond issue, and all other issues It may be necessary neces-sary to make during the war." |
