Show Both Army in Need of Literature Litera-ture for Recreational Reading Read-ing Books Bought in England. SACRAMENTO, Cal., Feb. 25. -More thou 100,000 books of fiction, poetry and essays havo been collected by the California branch of tho Library war service, composed of "liberty organizations organiza-tions throughout the United States. The books have been distributed among the military and naval establishments estab-lishments and used in equipping small naval vessels with libraries for the use of the men,, according to Milton J. Fcrgusen, stalo librarian and director of the work in the state! Thero is need for moro books, however, and Mr. Ferguson Fer-guson has urged the public to donate any books that can be spared In order to pvide the men in tho army and navy -with literature for recreational reading. Each library in the state has been designated a receiving station and will receive all books persons may wish to donate. In addition to collecting books for recreational reading the Library War service also has a fund of $1,750,000 raised last November which Is being used for tho purchaso of books on technical subjects of interest to men in various branches of the service. A part of this fund $50,000 of which was raised in California, according to Mr. Fcrgusen, is bolng Used In the purchase pur-chase of books In England for the men in France. The books are purchased tho to conserve shipping space. A campaign was begun recently for high school (text books used In tho educational ed-ucational department of the Young Men's Christian association which has established classes for tho instruction of men In camps who desire to devoto a part of, their Idle tlmo to study. Mr. Fcrgusen said any modern text book used in tho high schools and even in tho grammar schools could be used. |
