Show EUGENE V. DEBS UNDER ARREST CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 30. Eugene Eu-gene V. Debs, four times Socialist candidate can-didate for the presidency of the United Uni-ted States, was arrested here today by United States Marshal Charles W. Lapp and Deputy Marshal Charles Boehmo as he was about to deliver a speech. The arrest was mado on a warrant in connection with his speech at the Socialist state convention in Canton, June 16, last. The arrest was made on a secret indictment return yesterday. It is- understood un-derstood the Indictment contains sixteen six-teen counts under tho espionage act which provides a penalty of twenty years in tho penitentiary and a fino of 10,000 and costs for each violation. Debs was arrested as he was about to enter the garden where the meeting meet-ing was held. No commotion was caused as few persons were awaro of what was transpiring until after Mr. Debs was taken to the federal building. build-ing. Following the announcement of Mr, Deb's arrest a defense fund of more than $1,000 was raised by popular sub-' sub-' scription before the meeting ended. oo |
