Show GREAT JUMP IN PRICES. Editor Standard- I notice in the Standard an account of a senate debate de-bate in which the food speculator was denounced as one who should be hanged. hang-ed. Being a farmer and producer, I feel there are other speculators wh6 should bo placed in the same category. A few weeks ago, I shipped beef hides at 20 cents per pound. The returns showed only 18 cents. A few days later, having occasion to buy sole leather, I paid 51.50 per pound retail. (Signed) J. CHAPMAN. Mr. Chapman is a resident of Dew-eyvllle, Dew-eyvllle, and a reliable citizen. Ho presents pre-sents an example of the great discrepancy discrep-ancy which exists between the price of raw materials and the retailed manufactured man-ufactured articles. The difference is so great as to be an indictment of the middleman. The government, eventually, eventu-ally, must take Bteps to eliminate the excessive profits, and, if necessary, find a more direct way than at present pres-ent oxlBts of getting goods from the producer to the consumer. oo |
