A., whore once was the paddock for the Santa Anita race track on the ranch of the late E. K. (Lucky) Baldwin, Bald-win, to encourage thrift among soldiers sol-diers encamped here. "You will need the money when your Uncle Sammy stops the bed, board and doctor's care" printed on signs, cards and pamphlets, which are j distributed among tho soldiers each pay-day, is one of tho methods of call-1 ing attention of the young defenders 1 of the nation to oxistence of the bank, j The bank is an experiment, accord-1 ing to G. O. Runyon and Thomas Clay of the army Y. M. C. A., who originated origin-ated the idea. t j "It is to encourage men to 'think! of their financial start in life after tho l war Is over that we have in mind as the highest object of the bank," Mr Runyon said. Ho stated deposits for a single pay-day averaged more than 52 per man in camp. With the increase in-crease in pay to 330 a month beginning begin-ning with the July pay-day. the men can save ?20 a month easily, according accord-ing to Runyon. |
