Show The One-Test Rheumatic , i i ' I'M Everybody knows, or ought to know, that there is no such condition as "rheumatism," but that the title is applied to numerous joint diseases, chiefly localizations of bacterial infection in-fection arising from some septic focus or depot, such as infected tonsils, abscesses ab-scesses (often painless) at the roots of teeth or under old (perhaps comfortable) com-fortable) fillings or other dentures This is now well known, and in some instances to the sorrow of the patient A great 'many unfortunate victims of joint disease have sacrificed one or many teeth, which had been shown diseased by X.-ray negatives, yet without the anticipated relief of the joint disease. These patents arc fjene rally pessimistic. They arc rcal-y rcal-y one-test rheumatics. Failing to obtain ob-tain happy results, they have grown very cynical and suspicious of the medical profession in general. Teeth and tonsils are only two possible pos-sible sources of the infection which causes chronic so-called rheumatism. To give up after one therapeutic tost, after having the tonsils enucleated or the teeth extracted or surgically treated, treat-ed, is to betray a lack of good sporting sport-ing blood, to say nothing of self-esteem. To blame the doctor who suggested sug-gested the ruthless sacrifice of teeth or tonsils is perhaps human nature, but it isn't good sense. There arc several other tests tobc applied in such cases before deciding ithat the doctors arc no good. For instance, chronic "catarrh" or other nasal or throat symptoms may indicate a focus of infection in one of the nasal sinuses, which is quite as capable of causing chronic joint disease dis-ease as is a diseased tonsil or a root abscess. Long-standing, almost forgotten, pelvic disease, in both men and -women, is not rarely the cause of the joint trouble. Somehow these pelvic foci are easily forgotten. A chronic appendicitis may harbor the germs which sally forth to the J. i joints and keep up the rheumatiz. Old j H gall-sac infection, masquerading as ;H "stomach trouble" or "intestinal jndi- j H gestion," is another source of the joint . M disease in not a few cases. If at first H you don't succeed in finding the right i focus, try, try again.
