Show H A SENSATION IS H RECALLED. H What is the govornor doing toward H making good on his charge made dur- H ing the session o the legislature that, H if given an appropriation for the H work, ho would disclose corruption in Hjl past state administrations? H A month or more has passed since H tho legislature adjourned and, so far, H the public is not aware of any prob- fl ing or the uncovering of serious of- H fenses. For several years tho Stand- L ard has caught rumors of loose con- H duct and has heard of irregularities Hi ns disclosed by men in position to H know the inside of state affairs, and H when the governor mado his sonsa- m tional announcement to the Progres- fl sive meeting In Salt Lake, wo said: Hl "At last the Augean stables are to H ho cleaned." H An appropriation was mado and H then followed a silence which has not H been explained. This morning, to our H surprise, the Herald-Ropubllcan, the H organ of the political forces most In- H volved, calls up tho subject and, in a H challenging way, wants to know what H the governor is doing. The article H "Echoes of Governor Bamberger's H speech at the Progressive banquet, H while the legislature was in session, H I havo long since died away. But the Hji people of Utah are still waiting to Hj know whether he was kidding himself H or just showing the Progressives a H good time. As chief executive of the H state ho made some mighty serious H charges against former administrates administra-tes tions. In fact, the govornor has spec-1 spec-1 ialized in an attempt to convince the n people that their destinies and their Hl money were never in safo hands until Hl he took the oath of office. He has at-Hi at-Hi tempted to cast suspicion on practical-H practical-H ly every department In the stato house H and has promised startling exposes M 11-HI II HI I 1 tin I ' that so far have failed to arrive. Of course it must be taken into consideration consid-eration that the governor is naturally given to suspicion. It is pretty well known that ho has required his appointees ap-pointees to office to sign an undated resignation before they could qualify. Several Democrats who were under consideration for important posts refused re-fused tho offer .rather than submit to this roflection on their integrity and their ability to fill the office capably. They also felt that a resignation ovor which they had no control might bo used as a club later. But the point is this the governor has not mado good on his blanket charges against former administrations and his friends are wondering just what he hoped to gain by his talk to the galleries. It is quite certain that no former officials went to cover when he made his threats. To the contrary they publicly courted the investigation he proposed." There iB not only editorial opinion in tho foregoing, but a news items of moment. The signing of undated resignations res-ignations by appointees is not only new but novel. It is just possible the Herald-Republican, which was not on the best of terms with Governor Spry, is sicking sick-ing on tho inquisitors for the purpose pur-pose of embarrassing the leading men in the last state administration. However, the quizzing should bring a response. |
