Sunday afternoon at 3 p. m., tho Washington Market baseball team will enter tho local lists for amateur honors hon-ors by engaging in a contest at Glen-wood Glen-wood park, with the Southern Pacific team. The Southern Pacifies won the opening game of tho season last Sunday Sun-day and Manager Roy Stone has kept them warmed up during tho week just enough to be in good trim for their second contest. The Washington Market team has been built around the nucleus of the Utamade nine of last year, players who have been in the game together for several seasons past, and who are capable of putting up a high class brand of amateur baseball. Among those aro "Shorty" Williams, the scrappy conterflelder, who is assisting Manager Kennedy In directing the team; Vandy Layman, second baseman; base-man; Ed Painter, catcher; Fuller, the formor high school athlete; Check-etts, Check-etts, shortstop; Scott, one of the most dependable pitchers in this section of the state; Hill, Mumford, Roach, Tut-tle, Tut-tle, Thompson, White and others, well known members of other amateur teams that have been in the local limelight in past seasons. Thoy have been practicing for several sev-eral weeks and are in excellent condition con-dition to start a regular game. The proceeds of Sunday's contest will be used for putting the grounds in bettor bet-tor condition and for repairing the grandstand and fence. Tho use of the park has been donated by the city commissioners for amateur baseball this summer, with the understanding that all expenses be met by clubs officially of-ficially recognized by the board. There aro three of those, thus far organized, the Southern Pacific, Ogden Packing & Provision company and Washington Market. |
