Allen, wife of the warden, was murdered In her bedroom on the thin! floor of the administration building of the state penitentiary this morning. morn-ing. It Is believed that an attempt was made to attack Mrs. Allen before she was struck down. Then when she was either dead or unconscious, her body was placed on the bed, a quantity quan-tity of wood alcohol poured over it and the bedclothes ignited. The crime was accomplished within with-in a remarkably short space of time, ns the electric buzzer, by which Mrs. Allen made her calls for the convict con-vict who acted as house servant In the warden's private quarters, had sounded but a few minutes before two other convicts, who had not been able to find the house man. made I Jfl their way to the third floor of the . But one out of these 200 men had l he right to enter the private quarters quar-ters of Warden Allen and -his wife. . He is .Toe Campbell, a negro, who killed one of his own race and Is I serving an indeterminate sentence for manslaughter. Warden A Hen. w ho had been attracted at-tracted by what he believed to be good qualities in Campbell, and following fol-lowing his humanitarian policy to a prisoners, had made Campbell his house servant Rnd established him In the administration building that he might be within call. For this purpose pur-pose the buzzer was installed and when it sounded Campbell was supposed sup-posed to answer at onco The negro was made a trusty with the freedom of the prison and the city. Campbell is now in solitary confinement con-finement in the penitentiary' as a suspect, sus-pect, but he declares that he can easily establish his innocence and an alibi as he was outside the prison inclosure when tho fire was discovered. discov-ered.
