Zeppelins took part in the raid, it is. however, impossible to give the number accurately because of Hie heavy clouds. The noise of the propellors of the airships was lirst heard shortly before be-fore 11 o'clock. Then came at once the shock of the explosions as the bombs rained down from above. Some of the missiles were incendiary, and threw out bright flashes of light. Crowds assembled in the street cf Southend to view the raiders. The only fatality the killing of Mrs Falun, occurred while the woman was leaving a street, car. It is recalled on the previous raid the ouly victim was a woman Hriiish aeroplanes went tip in pur suit of the raiders, but were not successful suc-cessful in overtaking them. So.ne time later, two Zeppelins were seen over Burham-on Crouch, seven miles ( to the northeast of Southend, but no more bombs were dropped. Southend, which Is a municipal borough bor-ough and popular seaside resort it the mouth of the Thames, fort miles east of London, has been the targM of Zeppelin raiders several times in I the last six months On no previous occasion, however, have the results been serious. Admiralty Reports Two Killed. London. May 27, 1:50 p. m-The secretary of the admiralty has issued a statement on the Southend raid which contrary to the dispatches says two women were killed. It reads "Late last night a Zeppelin visited the east coast and bombs were dropped drop-ped on Southend The casualties reported re-ported today are two women killed and one child badly Injured. Very little material damage was done. Aeroplanes Aero-planes and seaplanes pursued the en amy. but the Zeppelin escaped in an easterly direction." oo |
