Show VICE M'COIICK CLAIMS VICTORY New York, Oct. 1. In a statement Issued this evening Chairman Vance C. McCormlck of the Democratic national na-tional committee says: "Two things stand out conspicuously conspicuous-ly in the campaign -thus far.. They are the absolute failure of the Hughos candidacy and the certainty that Woodrow "Vil6on will be re-elected president of the United States on November No-vember 7. "Reports that I havo received from all parts of the country convince me that president has the people with him, and that they are going Uo back him up with a fine big majority on election day And, furthermore, they are going to reelect a Democratic congress to co-operate with him In enacting more legislation in the interests in-terests of the people. "In the east, west, south and north, the people are happy and contented. The country is at peace. Prosperity rules the land as never before. Factories Fac-tories are working to their limit. The banks, always a barometer of business busi-ness conditions, are bulging with deposits. de-posits. President Wilson has brought peace and prosperity to the country, lyid that is the reason that the American people are for him. My reports re-ports show that the senate will re main overwhelmingly Democratic, and that the Democratic majority in the house will be increased to upward of fifty. "The recent speechmijking tours of Mr. Hughes have shown him in his true light. His addresses have been one continued tirade of fault-finding; they have been evasive; he has advanced ad-vanced not a single constructive idea; he has straddled on every question of Importance before the people. Mr. Hughes has tried hard to find an Issue In this campaign but has failed dismally. "The Republican nominee knows that the president has the people with him. because he has acted merely mere-ly as their spokesman, and has endeavored en-deavored to carry out their wishes on all questions affecting the welfare of the country. oo |
