Show SEVERE OUAKES ARE RECORDED Washington, April 24. Two severe earthquakes, one of them of great intensity in-tensity were recorded at Georgetown University, on the seismographs this morning. The heaviest shocks came at 3; 21 a. m., eastern time. The first of the quakes which the records Indicate was quite heavy, began be-gan at 11:31 o'clock last night and" continued until 12:07 o'clock this morning. It was estimated that its center was about 1.G0O miles from Washington. The second series of shocks, which were decidedly stronger than the -first, began at 3:08 a. m. The vibrations reached their maximum intensity at 3:21 a. m. At this point the needles of two of the seismographs were thrown off their recording drum, so severe were the shocks. The shocks continued until 4:12 a, m. It was estimated es-timated by Director Tondorf that the center of the second earthquake was 2,400 miles from Washington and he believed If it occurred in an inhabited inhabi-ted zone it must have done considerable consider-able damage. Santo Domingo, April 24. A sevore earthquake occurred here at 11:30 o'clock last night. No damage was caused. |
