Pursuant to tho plan announced sevoral weeks ngo, Adjutant General E. A. Wedgwood issued is-sued an order converting the companies compan-ies and band of tho First Infantry into troops and band of the First cavalry. New letters are assigned to tho companies com-panies with the transfor. Utah now has no infantry in its militia, although the now cavalrymon must remain 'foot soldiers until July 1, when mounts and other accouter-ments accouter-ments of cavalry are expected to be on hand. The new status of tho infantry Is shown iiv General Wedgwood's order, or-der, which follows: "The band and five companies of infantry of the guard of this state are hereby converted ino cavalry. "From and after this date they will take up cavalry drill and instruction a"s they may be specifically directed. "Cavalry equipment, so far as it differs from infantry oqulpmont, will be supplied at the earliest convenient time after July I, at which time all equipment not common to Infantry and cavalry, now in the possession of organizations, will be turned in. Proper Prop-er orders therefore, however, will be issued. "The nresent cavalry troop at Salt Lake City will be known as Troop A. First cavalry; Company B, First infantry, at Ogden, will be known as Troop B, First cavalry, CompanyH, First infantry at Salt Lake City will be known as Troop C. First cavalry The foregoing organizations are assigned as-signed to the First squadron when organized. "Company D, First infantry, at Mt Pleasant, will bo known as Troop E. First cavalry; Company F, First infantry, in-fantry, at Manti, will be known as Troop F. First cavalry: Company G, First infantry, at Ephraim, will bo known as Troop G, First cavalry. Wallace, United States army, inspector-Instructor to the Utah militia, was in Logan yesterday yester-day arranging with guard enthusiasts of that town the preliminaries for the organization of a troop of cavalry. Logan had planned to join with a company of infantry, but with tho abolition of the infantry, Logan is now for cavalry. The second additional troop to be organized will probably be formed in Provo. Representatives of the railroads entering en-tering Salt Lake called upon Adjutant General Wedgwood yesterday to discuss dis-cuss with him the requirements of railroad equipment and the expediting of the departure of troops in the event that the Utah National Guard is called out by the president for duty ,on the Mexican border. General Wedgwood declared that If the call came, the state troops would mobilize for departure depart-ure at Fort Douglas. General Wedgwood had received no word yesterday from Washington about the possible movement of Utah guardsmen for duty on the border. oo |
