Show 'causes a panic Carload of Grenades and Artillery Ar-tillery Ammunition Explodes Ex-plodes at Railway Station at Monterey, Mexico. Laredo, Texas, March 17, Fourteen Carranza soldiers and ten civilians were killed In an explosion of a carload car-load of grenades and artillery ammunition ammuni-tion in tho yards of the National Railways Rail-ways Line at Monterey, Mexico, last Tuesday, according to passengers reaching here today from Monterey. The news was suppressed by the Carranza Car-ranza authorities because of the tension ten-sion existing between the United States and Mexico. Several were injured. All the dead and injured were Mexicans. Immediately Immedi-ately after the explosion a mountainous mountain-ous cloud of smoko spread over the city and the cry "tho Americans havo arrived!" rang through the poorer section. When the smoke cleared away It was found that besides the 24 dead, a hundred yards of railroad track had been torn up, window panes shattered and other minor damage done for a radius of a half mile. The Carranza authorities suppressed publication of the news lest it stir tho peon classes to rise against the Americans. |
