Show RECEPTION ID BULL IT THE BERTH! Society folk of Ogden, Salt Lake City and other cities rejoiced last night at the Berthana hall In tho ushering in of the Autumn and Winter Win-ter social season, the event being a reception and ball given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Alonzo Romney. The hostesses were Mrs. Bertha Ec-clcs Ec-clcs and the Misses Vida, Llla, Flora and Vivian Eccles, mother and sisters sis-ters of Mrs. Romney and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kimball. Mr. and Mrs. Romney only recently returned from a honeymoon trip and last night greeted many of their friends for tho first time as a wedded couple and they received many congratulations and good wishes for a happy married life. Mrs. Eccles -was beautifully dressed in a gold not and embroidered chiffon chif-fon mauve gown over lace. Mlas Vlda EccleB wore au exceptionally pretty gown, of brocaded blue chiffon, ovor lace. Miss Lila Eccles' gown was white brocaded satin with gold embroidery. em-broidery. MiBs Flora Eccles was very pretty in pink Batin with lace trimming trim-ming and Miss Vivian Eccles wore a dainty gown of white and pink flowered flow-ered silk. Mrs. Romney appeared lovely In a beautiful gown of white satin and lace. For several ddys arrangements for the party had been going on at the hall, under tho direction of the hostesses hos-tesses and .7. F. Goss. manager of the Berthana, and the result was a social affair which for genuine enjoyment en-joyment has nover been excelled in the city. From the ushering In of the first guests by liveried footmen until the "Home Sweet Home" was played by the orchestra and the last guests departed for their homes, the party was an unbroken success", perfect per-fect in every appointment Tho guests began to arrive shortly before nine o'clock and after removing remov-ing their wraps, moved into the main reception hall, where they were greeted greet-ed by the hostesses, aud the guests of honor and their attendants. In the recolvlng lino were Mrs. Bertha Eccles, Ec-cles, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Alonzo Romney, Rom-ney, tho Misses Vlda, Lila, and Flora Eccles and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Kimball. Promptly at nine, a 14-plece 14-plece orchestra, directed by Albert Erickson, opened tho program of tho evening with a waltz and, as tho greetings In the recoption room wero concluded, the guests passed through the connecting hallway and glided out on the ballroom floor to the rythm of the music. By ten o'clock, the reception waB over, more than five hundred guests having passed by the receiving line. The crowd was a brllllaut one, marked by the co-mingling of bevys of as pretty and charming debutantes and handBomo young beaux for which the state Is noted, with married folk of the typo whose presence makes the parties of tho younger peoplo all the moro enjoyable. Though the season sea-son had just opened, many gowns and dressea of the latest model woro in -j . 1 tBMBm ' 11 J ' evidence and added to the charm of their wearers. For about two hours, the charm of the music and the big dancing surface sur-face held full sway and then in small groups as the time quickly passed, the dancers stole a few moments from the muse of the Terpschlcore to visit the banquet room. Here they 'partook 'par-took of a nicely appointed buffet luncheon, the tables on which it was served being prettily set off with vases of cut flowers. Here too, enjoyment en-joyment was had In watching the dancers dan-cers as they performed the latest steps of the fox trot, one step and hesitation waltz with grace artd skill. Had there been any doubt, by the way, whether these dances were to be the vogue this season, it was effectually ef-fectually dispelled by the fact that they predominated In the program and by the enthusiastic manner In which they wore encored. Throughout the evening, excellent punch was served at tho booth opening open-ing on tho ballroom and proved very satisfying to the dancers. The splendid and comfortable appointments appoint-ments of tho hall, the main lounging room, ladles rest room, gentlemen's smoking room, balcony and beautiful decorations, under tho soft glow of the indirect lights, called forth as much admiration as on the night the Berthana was first opened and served as modiums of rest with such effect that the merry throng danced tho "Home Sweet Home" with nearly near-ly as much vigor as the opening waltz. The musical program was replete with the latest dance scores through which, being played In excellent time by the orchestra, the dancers were given promise of unexcelled music throughout the season. At midnight, tho guests began to disperse and in bidding good-night to tho hostesses and tho guests of honor, eacji ono bespoke appreciation for the pleasurable evening given and congratulations con-gratulations on tho successful entrance en-trance of Mr. and Mrs.' Romney Into the city's social circle. |
