Somo people with an appetito which calls for a normal ration of food and water are not quite satisfied to Btop eating when they have cleaned up everything ev-erything in sight. They are, naturally natur-ally enough, inclined to bo dyspeptic. So as soon as the dinner has all disappeared dis-appeared they begin to lay plans for a little session of discontentment This pessimistic outlook makes them nervous. They begin swallowing, unconsciously un-consciously There Is a notion that if they can belch gas tho discomfort will pass away. So thoy swallow and swallow until they have their little balloons full of fresh nir. Then they begin a desultory belching which can be clearly heard for miles around and is kept up until thoy think thoy have belched enough gas to do for the time being. ) Gum chewers swallow considerably more fresh air than the stomach requires re-quires So do patients who have a chronic post-nasal catarrh with the secretion of excessive air swallowing Is observed In dyspeptics who have strong faith in the relief to be obtained ob-tained from belching gas. For it is commonly supposed that gas causes indigestion, whereas it is only an effect. ef-fect. How to Detect Air Swallowing. The patient collects a little salive in the mouth, bends the head forward slightly, closes the mouth and swallows. swal-lows. And why not9 Nobody owns the air. As he feels the air passing into the esophagus, or hears it, he things it is gas trying to come up, so he opens his mouth and Bang! well, it almost raises tho roof. "Watching him, the doctor sees the Adam's apple rise and fall with each act of swallowing. It takes about ten swallows of good fresh air to make a real Fourth of July performance after aft-er a perfectly cooked and well served dinner At times the air iB only incompletely in-completely belched again, a considerable consider-able portion passing on into the bowel How to Stop Eating Air. When you feel inclined to belch, open your mouth and keep It open. You can't swallow air while your mouth is open. Put a cork between your teeth if necessary and do not shut your mouth! till the desire to belch has passed away If you have been avoiding certain kinds" of food you like, merely on your own hook, stop starving yourself your-self and eat as much of whatever you like, as you want. If you can't find relief in this way, go and ask your doctor for a simple sedative for your nervous habit. We are speaking now of air swallowing only. This is not a talk about dyspepsia. THE JOY OF ACTIVITY The joy of activity is only realized and appreciated by those who have been held under restraint. Every woman should lead an active life, and for each hour and each minute min-ute there should be a good accounting. account-ing. Idleness is not productive of health and beauty, but does lead to unhappl-ness unhappl-ness and sluggishness. I do not mean to say that women should not set aside an adequate period peri-od for rest For rest is one of the, greatest essentials to health and recuperation, re-cuperation, but absenco of occupation is not rest. On the contrary, it is dangerously irksome. There is nothing so desperately harmful lo woman ns having nothing to do. To the active business woman it Is like being confined within four walls of a prison. There are many women with sufficient suffi-cient wealth to make work unnecessary. unneces-sary. But I am glad that not all wealthy women are willing to lead an aimlesp and idle life. Those who do represent one extreme. There is another class which must work too long and too hard to obtain' a mere livelihood. This class represents repre-sents another extreme. A woman is about as fortunate in one as in the other. But fhere is a happy medium and there the healthiest and happiest women wom-en are to be found. They are the women who have sufficient wholesome whole-some occupation to keep them active and enough time for vest to make them healthy. I have often wondered if some women wom-en kept diaries if they would not be ashamed .to read tho records written in them Many would record nothing noth-ing but Idleness, uselessness and senselessness. But unfortunately such women are generally too lazy to even keep diaries. Active women often long for time to idle away, but when they get a few days to idle away they find a million things to do to fill up the time the accumulation of months of good intentions. The working woman's Sunday is generally her hardest working ray. She does all her mending after yo reads the papers of the week. U washes her precious handkorchl v and her one or two pairs or silk stc M ings, she shampoos her head, m?a, "ures her finger nails, takes a '"tti walk In the fresh air, and it's 9 Um. to retire. But she is happier ar j p-- r-X V- the rich girl who Bits staring out of tho window surrounded with every luxury and every attention, satiated with forced pleasures, but with nothing noth-ing to do. , A1 The most discontented women In the world aro the idlers. They are tho dangerous ones, also, for idleness breeds mischief. They are worse than the helpless little children. We can put a child to work at anything and they are happy, give them a doll to dress, a house to build with sticks, or a rag to clean windows with, and they will bo happy for hours. But the women who have nothing to do give their time to penetrating Into others' thoughts of them. They become be-come abnormal in their suspicions. They distrust everyone and everything, every-thing, then they become obnoxious to others, and finally to themselves. The happiest women are the workers. It may not be necessary for you to undertake home or office work or to seek employment in a factory, but you will be wise to map out and follow some definite occupation. A life that s devoted wholly to self-indulgence .oon becomes hollow, empty and unsatisfying. un-satisfying. That is the reason why so many society women desert their old friends and seek employment in civic, social and political movements They, more than others, realize the discontent that is born of idleness. Keep your hands and minds busy Idlers and parasites are pitiful objects They are of no use to themselves nor to anybody else. There is work for everyone to do. Those who shirk it are in the minus class. Idleness adds no years to your life or the lives of others It merely subtracts sub-tracts from all the joys of living, and makes useless one of God's children oo |
