Show MANY INJURED ARE IN HOSPITALS Queenstown, Aug. 19. A large number num-ber of the Arabic's survivors who arrived here at 6 o'clock tonight were badly Injured. Thirty of the Injured have been sent to hospitals. The ship was struck so suddenly that many only had time to adjust their life preservers and leap into the sea when the giant liner went down. The whole of the ship's starboard astern was torn out by the explosion. One of the survivors stated: "We were on deck engaged in watching another ship and speculating speculat-ing on the chances of Its being torpedoed tor-pedoed when our own vessel was struck. There was no warning of any kind. There was a general rush for life preservers and the passengers passen-gers were just barely able to get these adjusted when the explosion occurred. occurr-ed. Ten life boats and life rafts were put over the side and many passengers pas-sengers fell into the water where they were able to reach the rafts and clung to them for their lives." Most' of the survivors were afloat for hours in the ship's boats, during which the Injured suf-fered severely before they were picked up. ARABIC SINKING CAUSE OF SAD SCENES IN LONDON Liverpool, Aug. 19. The sinking of the Arabic caused a repetition in London Lon-don of the sad scenes witnessed when tho T.iisifanin wns Inst. Outside the White Star building, in Thames street, , a big crowd gathered soon after the news became known. Throughout the evening the crowG grew as wives and relatives hurried to inquire the fate of the men aboard the sunken ship. It was more than four hours after the newB of the calamity was ' published before any authentic information infor-mation could be given as to the num- ( ber of lives lost. ' One young woman who moved about the crowd related how she had ' providentially escaped being on the liner. She was a stewardess and had signed for the voyage, but at the last moment was granted a leave of absence ab-sence to see her brother, wno was returning re-turning from the front. Three officers of the White Star line Colonel Concarnon, Sir Lionel Fletcher and A. B. Cauty remained at the offices all night. |
