Show M W HAS 001 I FOR GEE1 HI1H I PROGRESS The evening service last evening in First Presbyterian church commenced r . series of sermons on What Hath War w roughl ' ' rhe industrial phase o' it was considered last evening and aaor a musical program, llov Carver paid in pirl We are told that institutions and customs tn human society are never rntlrHy zood or bad and that we cannot can-not adopt rither pcacefuhipsb or war-likeness war-likeness ;.s the true sole philosophy Military discipline educates and awakens all the powers of men Men arp eager to win and their ingenuity I B quickened to jinent new and bet-tei bet-tei weapons We are told that in ble tnry the military inventions have led the way and time afterwards been applied to Industry. Chemical inventions inven-tions were made in attempt to produco combinations which would be destruc tiv in war. The skill of artisans has been developed in making wean ens and then that skill has been avail-1 avail-1 ahle tor industry The only bis mscliMies. we are told, which the ancients ever made were catapults, battenng-mrus and other enpines of xr.r and that the construction construc-tion of those familiarized men with mechanical devices which wpfp ran. ahie of universal application. Thus when we see the principles of ma-chinery ma-chinery applied to a ihousand uses in factory and every day life todav, we Bee the result of that which was com-pelled com-pelled man to commence. When we spc the line agricultural and mechanical mechan-ical tools put to a thousand uses, we see the result of that which war and it urgent necessity initiated. Man needed a spur or great need to force him to develop these and war and its peed was that first incentive. This Is what the past credits to war So the study of the history of war ields some rather peculiar results and shatters shat-ters some of the most popular be llefs of the common people. As this is an age of war it may be interesting BS well is helpful to consider some J of the litil" known results of war In the first place we find that war Is a product of our advanced civilization civiliza-tion We are prone to think that the saase and barbarian were the real waniors. and that as civilization advanced ad-vanced wars were less frequent. Our thoughts n i his regrd were the direct product of the ninteenth century' In the eighteenth centurj it was assumed that the State of primitive man was one of oeace, joy and quiet, but in the nineteenth century the doctrine of the survival of the strongest was made a part of the great evolutionary theon and it was therefore concluded conclud-ed thaf primitive man must have had l to battle long and hard for his place' i in lire. Now, however, comes the men of research and they tell us that the I savage state of nian was not nearly as W warlike as the civilized state has H been. Professor Sumner of Yale after HI searching thi records of all known primitive people makes this bold Claim. It if the tense condition of stnigple for conquest which arose v hen the white nun commenced to push the Indian from one place to nnother that caused the struggle r.mong the tribes and war became a necessity In the struggle lor conquest. The Sioux and other tribes were en-Joying en-Joying lon peace when the white men commenced to drive them back irom their old-time range. Then they too had ;o fight other tribes for a place and the era of bitter Indian warfare war-fare begun, Lhingston makes this same claim for the people of Africa. ( hW The people of Australia also enjoyed peace till the while men crowded them. Livingston says that some African tribes refused to keep cattle because they feared they might be- j come a cause of trouble about pasture pas-ture and lead to war. .Most every rare and people think they are tin- .superior people of the ?arth. Nine-tenths of the names given bj savage tribes to themselves mean "Men." The Only Men," "Men of Men" or something of a like nature of superiority. The Indian name Iroquois Iro-quois means "I am the real man " The 1-skim 08 once considered sending missionaries mis-sionaries to thp United States to teach US manners. It is this development of a spirit that, "we are better than ( fthers" that leads to war. Ameneaus ! have much Of this and we know German; Ger-man; and England have the same conceit. It is but a result of this that war follows. It is another case of pridp going before a fall. iod seems to be anle to bring good out or all kinds of material. He has Dven beci able to bring much of blessing out 01 the horrors of war. Military oipclpline educates and has l'pen a school for many before the I 'lays of the free school. Military interest develops iugenunity for in-w,ntion. in-w,ntion. In history the military Intentions In-tentions have led the way and the discoveries have later been applied to industry The first machines were the hue-' war machines of the ancients an-cients such as catapults, battering I 'anis and et The making of these familiarized th" race with mechanical devices of other trends and the were i applied to industry. Gunpowder was , a result oj trying to make Greek lire. Our friction match is n dlS' covers tint was attained in seeking a war product Our former I'nlterl states National bank was perfected In the crisis of 1860 It took a war to overcome the vested interests and create it. Many of our common bless ms have como to us through war. War breaks up caste and gives other, classes a chance it overthrows mo-i liopolles and creates new parties and leaders, It sets free new thought and principles It develops manhood and ruins the rule of certain powers. Xow such are the claims of those I who are showing some of the bless-. bless-. ings of war. We may admit them and having conceded them nnd much m rrp may raise the question, why cannot j tl.'sc and more be accomplished in a lielgn of peace.' Our new bank law 1 was so accomplished America is the I rreat leader in invention and schools and development and we have done our best In times of peace When I people hae the right to ote for and j develop new policies more can be I done In peace than in war. But of Course merica is not Europe and extreme ex-treme military power has never been overthrown bj peace measures. If this war gives the people of Europe the right and power to sbapen their own future and declare their own war it will not be a complete evil. There is one great inspiration in all the struggles of the past. God has overruled the evil and made the evil and wrath of men to praise him. Ho can do so now and what Is better, far better. He can overrule the evil and strife in our own lives and make our wrongs to praise Him. May He do so to the glory of His name. |
