Show EMPLOYMENT AGENT i NARROWLY ESCAPES MOBBING W. A. Hoydt of St. Paul, Minn., purporting to be an agent for the Elworth-I.acoon Construction company of New Yorfk City, was saved from a possible rough handling by a number num-ber of laborers this morning, on Hud son avenue, through the timely ar-rUal ar-rUal of Patrolman Wonten Hoydt came to Ogden, Saturday evening, and registered at tho Marion hotel, whore he arranged to carry on an employment em-ployment Tgency business He Inserted an advertisement In the local newspapers calling for 50,000 mechanics for employment on railroad rail-road construction work In Mexico The ads" were productive of quite a number of nppflcants. who were informed in-formed by Hoydt that, he required a deposit of $10 from each one to se- I cure a job. According to the story told b Hoydt to the police, at the sta- Hon, where he was taken by Officer Wooten, he was hired as an employment employ-ment agent by a man who purportod to be r member of the firm of El-worth-Laeoon, while he was In St I Louis. Mo. He met his employer in a saloon and the proposition put up to him was that he was to go first to Ogden. and that he was to collect $10 from each man that he hired and forward It to the New York offico of the com pany After he completed his labors, be was to be gien a share of tho fees thuo collected. He was advanced $50 for transportation and minor expenses ex-penses and no further recompense was assured. His first suspicion that he was being worked Into a 'fluke " game, he told the officers, was this morning, when one of the prospective prospec-tive employes asked what security he had to give for the $10 fee. As he had nothing to give, he began to think and finally concluded that the best thing he could do was to close the office and order the advertisements advertise-ments out of the papers. He proceeded first to the office of the morning paper and was followed by a number of the men who had applied ap-plied to him for work When he went Into the office, the men congregated In front of it and Officer Wooten made an Investigation Prom the general trend of con ersatlon. the officer of-ficer Judged that the best thing to do would be to get Hoydt to the station sta-tion in a roundabout way and he did so. Hoydt stated that he had not taken in any fees thus far and was willing to remain in the city for a couple of daye until the truthfulness of the ptatement could be ascertained He Is about 25 years old. of good appearance appear-ance and the officers are Inclined to bel'eve the story that he was unwittingly unwit-tingly drawn Into a deal that they think is crooked. He also said that the man Lacoon who hired him, also sent agents to Milwaukee, Denver and San Francisco. |
