Show CELEBRATION IN I SALTLAKE CITY Salt Lake, Jan. 1 A faufare of trumpets, automobile sirens, factory whistles and toy horns, a burst of song and a flood of champagne greeted greet-ed the glad New Year at half a second sec-ond past midnight this morning Walng flags, sinsing patriotic I songs and shouting gleefully hundreds of Salt Lakers at cafes and clubs toasted the New Year and wished that it would bring joy and happiness and prosperity to all the world Less noisy, but no less sincere, was the welcome which the young year received at watch parties held in many of the churches and in scores of homes. Not many Salt Lakers went to bed vesterdav They waited for the New Year, and retired satisfied satis-fied some time after midnight The revels of the coming of the New Year reached their climax at the cabarets of the city. There the New Year brought prosperity to the proprietors. The merrymakers de rived much of the orchestra, the singing sing-ing of the vocalists and the grace of the dancers. The continuous pop of the merry champagne cork furnished sweet music for the ears of the res -tauranteurs. At the Maxim cafe the guests were provided with a varied assortment ot noise-producing instruments with which to greet the young 1914. While waiting for the arrival of the New Year the guests at the cafe listened to the music, assisted the entertainers entertain-ers in singing the songs and danced the "new rags" between the tables When the mystic hour of midnight waB reached the lights went out ana the noise began. When the noise partially ceased the guests joined hands and assisted the entertainers in singing "Auld Lang Syne." A burst of patriotism greeted the New Year at the Semloh-Louvre. Here the guests and the entertainers, under un-der the brilliant decorations of the popular cafe, waved American flags and sang patriotic hymns. |
