Show CENTURY OF PEACE TO BE CELEBRATED Salt Lake, April 29. Circulars have been mailed by the Utah Peace society giving the plans and appointing a committee for the colebratlon of the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the treaty of Ghent which ended the war of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States. The celebrating of the century of peace between the English-speaking peoples of the world is to be a nation-wide affair and in England preparations are being made for the holding of festival services in connection with the celebration February 15, 1915, Is the centennial anniversary and as the Utah legislature will be in session at that time it is planned by the Utah Peace society to hold the main celebration in Salt Lake. A movement is on foot to have the school children of Utah contribute to a fund for a window, a tablet or i painting In the new state capitol com memorating the anniversary of peace between the two countries. Andrew Carnegie Is at the head of the national na-tional association and associated with him are Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root. illliam Jennings Bryan and many other men of national repute. In addition to the one hundredth anniersary of peace the Utah Peace society will celebrate the opening ol j the first. Hague peace conference which takes place on Sunday, May 17, 1914. It Is suggested by the state officers of-ficers of the Peace society that ap propriate meetings be held in each county in the state at which the purpose pur-pose and reasons for The Hague peace conference will be explained. Cutler is honorary presi dent of the society and Governor Wll Mam Spry Is piesldent In addition to the board of directors and other officers of the organization the committee com-mittee appointed to make arrange ments for the celebration of the anniversary an-niversary composes members from each county in the st3te. The smaller counties are represented by six to twenty-five members on the committee commit-tee and the larger counties by ten ty five to one hundred members. |
