Show ENFORCING THE PURE FOOD LAWS. The government pure food authorities authori-ties continue to make life miserable for those who deal in adulterated food products Recently there have been many seizures of adulterated and mis-branded mis-branded goods and one excellent feature fea-ture of the condemnations that followed fol-lowed was the publication of the names of the firms engaged in this indefensible traffic. For Instance here is a list of violators as given out today by the department of agrl culture: "One cask of lemon flavor, alleged to have been shipped by N. Loewen-steln Loewen-steln and company, Chicago, 111., was seized at Indianapolis, Ind., Decern ber 9, on the ground that It was adulterated and misbranded in that a dilute terpeneless lemon flavor had been added to the product. "Two cans of oil wintergTeen leaf, alleged to have been shipped by F. P. Dowe, Spring Glen, N. Y., were seized at Boston, Mass., December 15, on the ground that the product was misbranded in being labeled "Oil Wln-tergreen Wln-tergreen Leaf" as examination showed it to be a mixture of oil of wintergreen and methyl salicylate. "Two hundred and eighty-eight cases of tomato conserve, alleged to have been shipped by C. D. Stone & Co., New York, were seized at Chicago, Chi-cago, 111., on December 16, on the ground that It was adulterated In that the product consisted in whole or in part of a filthy, decomposed, or putrid pu-trid animal or vegetable substance. "Four bags of dried apples, alleged to have been shipped by A. J. Turner, Philpott, Va were seized at Baltl more, Md., December 16, on the ground that they were adulterated, in that the product consisted in whole or In part of a filthy, decomposed, or putrid vegetable substance." No business house coming under a condemnation as set forth In any one of the above cases can expect to long survive the stigma of dishonesty. The day has gone when frauds of that kind can be perpetrated on the pub lie with any degree of safety. Once discovered in fraud, a business concern con-cern must suffer the loss of tho confidence con-fidence of its trade. |
