Show oo SHOULD WOMEN BE ALLOWED TO VOTE. A woman, givinc attention to " Citizen," who eony-nds that "those who cannot back up a bullet should not vote," presents the following answer an-swer which has our endorsement. "What Is the cause of war1 Our histories, mostly written by gentle-jtnen gentle-jtnen with their noses very close to the paper, refer most wars to quarrels among kings, disputes ahout territory, I rselal and religious prejudices, the I glorv of potentates and the pride of princes, when, as a matter of fact most wars have had their fundament, al cause in special privilege stirring up the common people of different races to fiu-ht each other, developing a so-called "patriotism' and Incidentally Incident-ally keeping their hands off special privilege and its graft. When conditions condi-tions of the working people become Intolerable and disturbances threaten at home, a wise king, who is generals' general-s' nothing bu the mere "totem" of special privilege, stirs up the poverty-stricken poverty-stricken masses to work off their dissatisfaction dis-satisfaction fighting somebody else, ft ith an occasional prize of war to a rising plebeian as a stimulus. "The masses have always acted Ipreclseh as did the grizzly bear aud I lion who were staged to fiKht in a I wet-tern ring some years ago The I I wo animals had no c;:tifte for a fight, jbut prodded bj the pikes of special privilege humans al the ringside, they tore each other to pieces, and each doubtless thought he u a a crv patriotic pa-triotic individual "So long as we have special prlvl-I. prlvl-I. g and the gocrnnient in the hands of the few, so long will poverty permit per-mit the lower animals of the human nce to be prodded to fight each other oth-er rather than to fight those who 63 plOfl I hem. 'The real question then is, Will the advent ol woman to the franchise help do away with special privilege or not? The answer to this is obvious Wherever Wher-ever women can vote, the initiative, referendum and recall, which put the SOI rnmenl where It belongs, in the hands of the people, have always re-c re-c ied full support, ami this alone will j eut the number of wars in two a long WSJt below the middle " A Citizen thinks that woman Is an inferior being, a sort of a necessary neces-sary evil. My observation is just the reverse of this In all the walks uf life, from the hi-het intellectual type down through the "hayseed" tiller of the soli, aud further on down to the ' lowest and most brutal sav ge. the tvemnn Is invariably moro civilized, more bent on Improving conditions and working for higher ideals than Is the man. True, that is not equality. It is superiority, a woman s hraln Is not as Inventive, as creative as Is d man's, but it has other qualities of, quick perception, finesse, accurate judgment or Intuition, along many lines far superior to man's qualities along those same lines. It is a differ, cnt brain, but It is just as good. " War's horrors come home to women wom-en more than to men. and they get none of Its glories or emoluments 'i When the American women voter.- vote io send their sons and husbands hus-bands forth to battle, you can guarantee guar-antee that It will be a holy and righteous righte-ous war. for which every man with red blood in his veins will be ready to 1 olunteer." |
