Show WHY TAXES IN UTAH ARE TOO HIGH The editor of the Salina Call Is somewhat disgusted over the extravagance extrav-agance In state and county govern ments and offers this advice "Taxes are coming to be a burden They go up and up without limit. We are greatly in favor of a sweeping re ductlon In taxes, but not any of the taxes affecting schools, or municipal Improvements We believe in striking at the head BtartlUg right We would ask the legislators to serve without pay or at least for their expenses. We would ask them to stop creating new offices and raising salaries. And in siead of appropriating $1,000,000 more than the state's revenues we would ask them to save :it least $10,000 of each year's revenue We would discharge dis-charge at least half of the state and ount officials, cut the salaries of ttip others In two and give them some thing to do Personally we will guarantee guar-antee to do the work of three average Btate officials for the salary of one In offices like that of land com'mls-sloner com'mls-sloner and similar ones the men should serve for their expenses Then we would not bond the state to borrow bor-row money for one department when another department Is letting out money at Interest We would see to It that prisons, hospitals and Infirmaries Infirmar-ies were self-supporting " The one way b which to correct these abuses In public office is io place a correct valuation n the railroads rail-roads and other large property interests inter-ests When the big concerns discover discov-er they cannot escape their full share of the burden of extravagance. tttOJ will make it their business to compel, or at least urge, economy in public affairs and they will be listened to bj legislators and other officeholder? When the people enlist the big property prop-erty owners on the side of reduced expenses In state, county and city government, the vexatious tax problem prob-lem shall be solved |
