manns remarks were directed principally to the organization of the american party which was perfected the night before in ogden at the head of which organization frank J callnon stands the speaker was not mincing in his words regarding the attitude of mr cannon in the politics of the state ile he referred to the statements by cannon callnon at the so eo called american conven tion alon and unflinchingly criticized criticised him tor for the stand ho he is taking against the mormon church and the people of that faith he rehearsed a little political history that shows conclusively he part frank cannon has played ho he that to day mr cannon Is tile the arch enemy of the church but that j there was a time when lie he cannon was its staunchest friend and much courted the so called church influence I 1 that he now considers so abominable in 1894 when cannon was on the republican ticket tor for congress mr glasmann stated lie ho was very happy to circulate nuggets of truth which represented that tile the leaders of the church were republicans and that it was desired that cannon should be elected to congress and also at that time a certain recommendation from the bishop of franks franics ecclesiastical ward in ogden who now would dare t to go on oil tile the stump with a bishops je commend these things were all courted by mr cannon then because he desired to be elected to tho the united states congress but today lie he is casting bitter reflections upon the people of the church and the leaders thereof for the espre expression slon of a single word that may be construed to be in favor of any particular candidate or party he stated that mr cannon now says there Is a war on at vils his time as to whether the hierarchy shall dominate the politics of the state of utah and that it Is the mission of the so called american party to fight president joseph brill smith th and the IN mormon formon church that they may not place a religious control over utah in political matters band nd said the speaker what is thlu war for it to Is simply for the purpose of controlling the election of united states senators in utah and to make president joseph joaeph P F years ago why va ane 0 bitterness now he is trying to pit brother against brother friend against friend business men against each other which will disturb tho the tranquility of ogden that has prevailed so long why in the fifteen years of peace that has prevailed in ogden our city has grown moro more than in all the history of life I 1 hope the american party movement in ogden will not receive sufficient encouragement to permit it to survive let us not quarrel over religious matters nor become embroiled in a religious political contention when mr glasmann introduced senator Do dolliver lliTer there was prolonged applause from the audience and it nas a number of minutes before the re senator bator could begin his remarks the clator opened his remarks by stating that he did not propose to enter into any sort of discussion of local affairs and that he was quite certain anai anat tile the people in utah were quite capable of attending to their own business lie he stated that he was much pleased to participate in a disc discussion assion of national politics with tile the good people at ogden ile he thought mr glasmann had given him a little too much praise in his introductory remarks particularly when mr glasmann referred to him as the man who haj had refused the nomination tor for vice president resl dent on the republican ticket senator dolliver said 1 I got into that through the influence of my friends and I 1 got out of it by unanimous consent this sally brought forth a peal ol of laughter from the audience the speaker stated that his political field was vas not particularly large but that he le felt assured that it is several times larger than that of his friend torn tom kearns during the course of his remarks senator dolliver stated that he was pleased to be associated with the hon reed smoot senator arom utaji in the work of erving the forests of the united states and in other projects of vast importance to tha we western tern country he also paid a glowing tribute of respect to the pioneers of utah who had sacrificed their all to develop this mountain waste and cause use it to bring forth the fruits of the soil ile he said he Is now ratty pretty well el acquainted with the western country and that he could testify to tie the splendid results that nad been accomplished through the frugality and indefatigable efforts of the people continuing ho he said referring to an argument in which it was contended that bryan was a god made man while taft was a man made man the senator exar expressed ess the belief that both were god made men but he proceeded 1 I confide to you not to go one inch outside this hall ball that I 1 think he did a much better job on the big one than he did on the little fellow after referring to the failure of br bryan to furnish a paramount issue fx for this campaign dolliver said in roy my opinion the paramount issue of this campaign Is IB the preservation of those high ideals of private integrity and political honesty that have been exemplified in theodore roosevelt the speaker called attention to the fact that the democratic platform called for the placing of the free list of five articles three of which had bad been on the free list for twenty years proceeding ce ho he said the tariff should lie he revised and it will be revised hut but it ought to lie be revised if not by its friends at least by its acquaintances 1 I han hae 0 no doubt that some have come here tonight expecting that I 1 would give the democrats something of what Is coming to them but I 1 will not do that I 1 will not even speak an unkind word of their standard bearer because I 1 have served with him and know that while ho he neglected his op nevertheless he has bas made a warm place for himself in the hearts of millions of his countrymen 1 I will not go as far however as a man I 1 met the other day who told me bryan is a god made man while taft Is a man made man referring no doubt to our strenuous friend I 1 think god i made both of them but lie ile made a better job with the big one than he did atin it is necessary under our system of government to have two parties one to administer the other to he be on I 1 I 1 guard to see that the job is done right the republican party has shown especial I 1 qualification for administering while our other friends are arc best ethere to stand on guard there Is one thing in this campaign I 1 which has bothered me considerably and that Is we have no one to tell us i what the paramount issue Is the invoice voice Is still that in former campaigns has told us what to discuss and what to lot let alone this year we aheard heard it bryan makes a pathetic figure when lie he exclaims that he Is going to stand on everything in the democratic platform this remarkable document he hugs to his breast as if it were the revelations of st john As tor for myself ray my feeling for it has been much impaired since I 1 learned that it was dug up from an alfalfa field in oklahoma I 1 1 I suppose evory every man has his ideas I 1 I 1 of what the pai paramount amount issue should be but we frequently malco make mist mistakes altes in putting worldly affairs to lo tile the fore i raising moneymaking money making the building of cities and tho the interests of commerce I 1 to levels to which they do not belong history shows they are not the first concern of a nation but must be subi ordin atod to tho the development of national character to the quickening of the public conscience and to the preservation er of the high ideals formed at the fireside I 1 I 1 the ithe chief concern in any campaign la Is not the tariff war diplomacy industry or com commerce but rather to arous arousa a stronger fidelity to those high ideals of government which havo bavo mado made the el eight 9 lit years of roosevelt unequaled in the history of this country I 1 I 1 I 1 after that may come the question I 1 I 1 I 1 of making a good living and when I 1 come to consider that I 1 like the republican party because it makes tho the people happy prosperous and contented the best thing about the republican party Is that it has |
