they are put nut in office to administer the laws which are an espre expression assion of the will of the people if thero there I 1 Is s a law that is not the will of the people let it be removed from the statute books but while there let it be enforced the easiest way to be rid of an objectionable law is to enforce it As we go to the polls therefore let us choose those whom bethink we I 1 think will act as our servants I 1 do not mean the servants of a few or the servants of tile the majority but the servants of all the people the law is the will hlll of thi i people and should be respected therefore as we choose for office from the presidential chair down let us have this in mind the enforcement of the law without fear or favor with others there arises the question of better laws laws which will bo be accommodated to the needs and wishes of the people therefore we should vote veto for such can candidates di dates as will satisfy our judgment as aa to what is needed and who will give that which is needed for legislative candidates state and national it is therefore necessary that we choose conscientiously with a little care we can learn how these candidates stand on issues of importance and judge accordingly the wisdom of a republican form of government is still in the balance wo we need not fear it if tho the voters will only inform themselves and vote their convictions vict vic ions tiong I 1 consider it a hopeful sign that thoro there will be such a large number of scratched tickets this year party lines are to be thrown to the winds and people will vote irrespective of party the result will not be known with any reao degree of certainty until the count la is made it la is a hopeful sign in a republican government when this Is so but one is ig glad to notice that moral issues aro are coming to tho the front for fo r many years the voters have desired to have the chance to decide with regard to the presence of those things which aro are evil in their effect upon man the forces represented as they have been in politics have hi ave controlled lo 10 these many years they can still the public voice no longer the people shall rule with regard to this issue the saloon I 1 Is going and with it will go that company of kindred evils which have by the th intemperance caused thereby no christian cap miss his opportunity to register his v vote e in these matters do not fall at this time then follow your ballot with a personal insistence to thoe thoe elected el that they shall carry out their pledges for or betterment dut but lot let us ua examine more closely As to national issues lisuch it is purely I a I 1 1 matter of economical and social welfare As least as far as utah I 1 Is 9 concerned there will be rio fo national I 1 essul raised that involves any moral issue I 1 do not feel that this is the time or places e to discuss them suffice it to say that it hardly seems likely that there will be any special change in national conditions this s period of depression that Is hold held up before us its reaches farther than the borders ot of will be adjusted our own land and when wo we learn our lesson of over conal confidence and speculation W we pass by also the question of representative in the national house As to th thel estate tate tickets a moral issue r seems not to appear neither of tho the parties have adopted any specially moral issues I 1 issues it Is largely a matter of which side you can trust to serve the people without fear or favor there v be but little difference in the administration of either party that might be elected unless it might be some of the smaller parties that stand no likelihood of being successful gains in political life aro are a matter of slow process rather than sweeping changes but when it comes to t 0 local issues we find two great issues of which we can give expression they are local option and law enforcement anfor C ement let us i consider them local option will come up in the state legislature the people have been giving expression to a desire for a law that would give them an opportunity to decide by counties i whether they should have saloons or not the demand of the people is so I 1 great that it seems now that the liquor interests would bo be anxious to comero compro I 1 mise on precinct option that is that instead of the county as a unit voting in the matter that it should be left to the individual precincts this would permit two or three precincts of ogden to defy the will of the entire county no As the entire county pays the bill of saloon suppo support rt about 50 per annum for weber county the county as a wh ole should decide and ithe the liquor interests may be thankful if the people I 1 do not get aroused to I 1 the extent that they would decide that they need not go ga such a long way around to prohibition local option is an issue another issue is law enforcement we have a number of laws lais that are not only broken but broken with the open agreement of public officials I 1 do not think that all the saloon laws are enforced for example the law against any party owning more than three saloons is practically ignored but the laws against gambling are sim ply used to get revenue for the city A jila law against anything is ig intended to top stop that thing rattler rather than to encourage courage it but the lawsl against gambling are simply used to encourage the argame game i the law against the crime of electric tr ie alley is another similar instance what a terrible plague spot it is how mhd young men of our city are being contaminated here the passions are fed till they become a raging fury to break forth in awful crime here He rethey they acquire awful disease later to be revealed in the broken broke health of fair young brides or weak offspring perhaps many of the patrons are old many far too many are the youth and young men who should bo be keeping themselves pure for the married state A away yay with electric atley alley atey aley I 1 ey better a policeman on every sor ner to protect womanhood from tho the passion uncontrolled than that our sons and daughters should be caught in this awful cesspool of electric alley kway away with it but the laws of the state that should correct this abuse are simply used to increase it and the officials charged and sworn to enforce the law make the law a laughing stock before us all the city officers and all the county officers seem perfectly willing to let matters continue Is s they are and many of these present officials are actually up tor for reelection election re have we any reason to think that they will wil I 1 do do any be bettor ater than in the past now as to these great questions ibcal option and law enforcement what offices that are to be filled at time will have a bearing on this issue the positions of senator and afi of the house of represents presenta re awes our lawmakers weber county chooses a senator and four rep arres the democratic county co convention 1 I has pledged its candidates es to work and vote for local option the republican county y convention was silent it if you are Batis satisfied fied that the man for whom you wish to vote is lu favor of local option vote for him it if youart not satisfied then you will be responsible while local option is an all issue none of the republican c candidates have declared themselves the papers are open if they wish to declare themselves so that wo we may linow know they have time personally I 1 am convinced that a number of republicans Republic aua favor local option they may not wish me to state it publicly they have not done it themselves why not let le us know do they wish to get the votes that those opposed to local option control by keeping silent it Is our anten tion to vote for several republican legislators isla Is tors it they want your vote vole why not let you know where they stand on oil this isue issue the only real one of the whole campaign it if they favor local option it would have h ave been wise to have said so this is not intended for more than a statement of the conditions as they present themselves remember you are to vote for the local option issue how shall it be answer the question for yourself law enforcement bears upon the administration of these officers namely county commissioners county attorney 1 district attorney district judge county sheriff of all the candidates seeking these offices we must ask ash ourselves to judge by the party declaration and past record of the individual and his present fitus fitness can we expect law enforce ment against saloons gambling and prostitution from any candidates tor for these offices if so BO your duty Is to vote accordingly we could hope tor for a better declaration from many but ancone who ilas has been observant can see his way clear to some degree at least I 1 then after it Is all over go to the successful candidates for whom you have voted and tell thern them what you want them to do and what you elpe expect t of them I 1 let us ua have leavo righteousness more and that we may do that the bater let us love the righteous bodmore Go god dmore more too |
