Show WOULD HAVE LABOO LABOG GO INTO POLITICS secre secretary tary duffy of carpenters ers ens bitter tirade against courts sat salt lake april 20 there were just about two things that prank frank dutty dufty general secreta secretary ry of tho the united brotherhood of carpenters and joiners of america had to tell teh the members of the union nion who gathered in the fedoration federation of labor hall yesterday afternoon one of these was an account of the plans for the national session of the brotherhood which will convene in salt lake early next october the other was that the time has come come when organized labor should take enough of a hand in politics to vote for men who will support it the meeting was waa called as a mass meeting at which carpenters of the city were invited to bo be present it happened however that a fo former comrade was being burled at the same hour and the attendance at federa tion of libor labor hall on that account was not so 0 o large as it might otherwise have been president william huber of tho the union who had expected to be present yesterday was anex summoned west in greater haste than had bad at first been intended F P B D tripp president of the district council was chairman of the meeting yesterday and president A L diffen dorffer dorf ter of local was also on tho the platform stephen ff love who was introduced as president of the state senate in that capacity as a member of the commercial club and as a private citizen welcomed the carpenters to their national meeting here in the fall during his talk secretary dufty duffy referred to the need of the laboring man to wake up and take a hand in the political questions of the day it is only in the last three months he declared that we have been taught the lesson of our lives wo we had trusted to obtain justice from the courts yet in three decisions since january the courts have been against us they hava delivered three sweltering blows that knocked you to the carpet and now you are wondering bring in a dazed mariner manner just what has happened to you these decisions will wake you up you have got to wake up and defend your rights and the remedy la Is in a little white piece of paper called the ballot just see what these decisions are there is the employers liability act which has been declared lional in the case from tennessee to the united states supreme court then the press has been muzzled even your own carpenter your official organ of which I 1 am editor dare not according to a recent decision print what it wants to we are compelled to leave out the we dont patronize list what is more by the terms of the injunction temporary at first and which was made permanent two weeks ago we cannot write a word a about abo ut the case and in a recent decision of the same court damages were assessed against the hatters of america tor for three times the loss that was claimed by the plaintiff hat com company simply because the union men and women told those who were going to work at the companas comp anys factory that the unions were battling against that company I 1 for their rights and asked them not to go to work for such employers at such a time ilme do you call that justice do you think that is a square deal these there were all injunction cases and I 1 am opposed to injunctions in their present form I 1 am not in favor of allowing any judge on the bench to issue such prohibitive order without first hearing both sides of the ca case yet as the law stands any judge can enjoin me without giving me any 1 I am opposed to allowing some judges to render any injunctions at all I 1 believe that the ballot should rule what right has any appointive officer of the government to render void and ineffectual any law that the people through their representatives have passed wo we have asked congress to relieve us and have got no relief and I 1 say that remembering that con congress gregs has passed the employers liability act I 1 and so I 1 say to you go into politics that does not mean into party politics but it has been made so plain that everybody must realize it that you roust must lift hit back when you receive such blows as those of these court decisions vote for the men for office in the city and the state and the united states government who will fight for the protection of the wage earner tor for the uplifting of humanity |
