Show shippers propose that carriers submit to infera state commission chicago may 15 representatives of more than commercial organizations izat ions from all parts of the country at a meeting here tonight adopted resolutions protesting against the proposed advance in freight rates but agreeing to submit tho question of the justice of such advance to the interstate commerce commission without appeal lo 10 the courts in the event of the railroads refusing to consent to arbitration the federal courts are to be asked to issue injunctions against the railroads in every district where an attempt may bo made to increase the rates the conference authorized chairman C W to appoint a committee of fifteen to carry out the terms of the resolution the proposed advance of 10 to 15 per cent in official classification territory the resolutions declare means an increase of freight charges of about annually which la an acute additional burden upon the business interests ot the country the resolution beai the carriers arbitrarily and with out con f ere nee with or hearing of the shippers are attempting to do what will still further disorganize and injure commercial conditions whenever the various railroad commissions of the various states have undertaken 10 lower freight rates the carriers have asserted their constitutional right to go into court and attack those reductions if deemed by them unreasonable the time has come ahn tho shippers m self protection are compelled to resort to the same remedy the shippers represented by this conference now propose that the carriers submit to the interstate commerce commission the propriety and reasonableness of the creace and that such increase be held in abeyance until that tribunal hay heard the parties in interest and has passed upon the question |
