Show FOR OLD SOLDIERS I 1 one of the most important pieces of legislation of the present congress is the bill approved april 19 which increases the pension of widows minor children and so forth of deceased soldiers arid and sailors of the late civil war the war with mexico the indian wars and so forth and grants a pension to certain widows of the deceased esol soldiers and sailors of the civil war the measure provides that from and after the passage of this aft act the rate of pension tor for widows in minor I 1 nor children under tinder the age of sixteen years bears and helpless minors as defined by existing laws now on the hb t roll or hereafter to be placed on the pension rolland roll and entitled to receive a less rato rate than hereinafter provided shall be talve twelve dollars per month and nothing herein shall be construed to affect the existing allowance of two dollars per month for each child under tinder the ago age of sixteen years and for each help 1 1 les ss child and find andall all acts or parts of acts I 1 inconsistent with elih the provisions of this fact act are hereby repealed provided however that this act shall not bo be so construed as to reduce any pension under any act public or private see sec 2 that if any officer or enlisted roan man who served ninety days or moraln the army or navy of the united states during the late civil war and who has been honorably discharged has died or shall hereafter die leaving a widow such widow shall upon due proof of her husbands deat deahn n without proving hiss his death to be the result of his army or navy service be placed on the pension roll from tho the date of the filing of her application under tinder this act at the rate of df twelve dollars per month during her widowhood provided that said widow shall have married said soldier or sailor prior to june twenty seventh eighteen hundred and ninety and tho the benefits of this section shall include I 1 those widows whose husbands if living would have a status under the joint resolutions of february fifteenth eighteen hundred and ninety five july first nineteen hundred and two and june twenty eighth nineteen hundred and six see sec 3 that no claim agent or attorney shall be recognized in the adjudication of claims under the first section of this net act and that no agent attorney toney at or jtb other r person engaged in preparing pr presenting or prosecuting any claim under tinder the provisions of the second seq seo tion of this act shall directly or of indirectly 1 contract for demand receive or retain for such services in preparing presenting or pr prosecuting I 1 such claim a sum greater than ten dollars which sum shall be payable only upon the order of the Comm commissioner iloner of I 1 pensions by the jension agent making p payment of the pension allowed 1 and I 1 any person who shall violate any of the provisions of this section or who shall I 1 wrongfully withhold from the pensioner or claimant claimant ahe the whole 0 or F any iq part of a pension br or claim allowed or due such pensioner or claimant claiman under this act snail shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor arid and upon convict conviction itin thereof shall ahall for each and every such offense bu be juned not exceeding five hundred dollars or be imprisoned at hard labor not ot exceeding two years yearb or both in tho discretion of the ourt court this new le legislation I will affect a |
