Show HEAD HEAD OF THE HARRIMAN ROADS Robert S Lovett successor of E H Harriman as head of the Harrman roads will arrive in Ogden tomorrow forenoon and if the distinguished lawyer and railroad man sees fit to accept an tion which has been extended lie he will be the guest of th the Weber club I while in this city This is the initial trip of Mr Lovett as president of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads and it is well that in form ing his first impressions he is to be aided by the Weber club in corn ing to the decision that Ogden is One nc of the big terminal nal points of his lines and a place not to be overlooked Julius is thoroughly well posted on every detail of the Harriman organization and he knows the roadS from Chicago to the Coast and south to New Orleans Fortunately he accompanies Mr Lovett and will be here to give an idea of the necessity of plan planning planning ning and nd executing extensive at this point looking to the future greatness of the Harriman roads in the intermountain Country and the maintaining of the supremacy of the central trans transcontinental transContinental continental highway of which the Union Pacific and Southern are the most important parts Mr Lovett is said to be a man legal learning with a most practical head He was selected by E H Harriman Hardman to guide the law department of the Harriman Haniman roads and now he is the directing power over the roads with more miles of railroad to care for than has any other man in n the United States Mr Lovetts biographer says the Texan began life at the bottom Born June 22 1860 on his fathers farm near Shephard Tex Lovett was ushered into the world under the humblest auspices The story goes that at the age of 15 while following a plow he caught his first glimpse of a locomotive It IL fascinated him Going to Shep hard he obtained work in a store prese preserving ving his interest in railroad ing and later becoming agent of the Houston East and West Texas ying ing saved a little money he began the study of law and in order to increase his fis library gave up his position at Shephard and moved I to Houston where he entered the local freight office of the Houston East and West Texas Later he attracted the attention of Jay Gould and Collis P Huntington He became general counsel of the Texas and Pac Pacific ic road at Dallas Subsequently he declined a substantial offer from Gould and joined the firm of Baker Botts Baker Lovett counsel for the Southern Pacific company By amalgamating the Texas Cen Central Central and the Houston East and West Vest Texas roads Lovett attracted the attention of Harriman Hardman who several years ago summoned him to New NewYork NewYork York where he was made and general counsel of the Harriman lines In this capacity Lovett became the perso personal al adviser of Harriman It is said of him that while other lawyers told Harriman how he could do things Lovett told the great builder of railroads what he could do and what he could not do Harriman liked it so the story con continues continues and Lovett eventually became his closest friend as well as his legal adviser Thus the dreams of a great railroad system were trans transmitted transmitted to Lovett and upon the death of the financier Lovett was as the man best fitted to carry out plans plansOn On October Lovett was selected president of the Union Pac Pacific ic and chairman of the committee He Ee was later elect elected elected ed president of the tho Southern Pacific company And now Ogden is to receive its first introduction to this re remarkable remarkable man The people of this city know Mr well welland and respect him as one of the greatest railroad men of the age They hope to know Mr Lovett as favorably May the greetings of tomorrow develop mutual appreciation and warm friendship |
