W BURGESS Nothing else a thrill can bring Like that when first we see a thing Cubby Bear Cubby was looking at his hs first snow It was the day after Thanks Thanks- giving Cubby had had a wonderful dinner which Farmer Browns Brown's Boy Bo had brought to him over o In the I Green Forest He wanted to follow toll ow Farmer Fanner Browns Brown's Boy back home but buthe buthe buthe he wanted even more to take a nap I You know a a. full stomach makes one sleepy So 60 after following Farmer Browns Brown's Boy a few step stele Cubby turned aside and sought a warm sunny spot where he could curl up and take a nap When he awoke Jolly round red Mr Sun was Just going to bed be behind be- be behind behind hind the Purple Hills but no one could see this for a a. gr great gnat at bank bonk of clouds bid hid Jolly joll round red Mr Sun And it hid the tops of the Purple Hills too At first Cubby couldn't think where he was Then he re reo re- For perhaps five mins min min- minutes minutes utes he sniffed around picking up crumbs left from that feast Then It was getting dark the wind rind blew cold and Cubby began to wish h that he could find his mother and sis sis- ter But he hadn't the least idea where they were vere and so after wan wan- wandering wandering wandering dering around for a a. while he de de- decided decided de- de decided to spend the night where he had spent pent the previous pre night It was as a snug comfortable place In Ina ina a a. hollow In the base of a tree He was warm and sheltered there Cubby slept all aU night He He didn't au alien once It was broad daylight when at last lost he did awaken He peeked out from his hollow And then his eyes flew very ery wide open Indeed You never did see fee so 60 much surprise in a a. pair of eyes as there was in the eyes of Cubby When he had gone to bed the earth had been b en covered with brown leaves Now there wasn't a brown leaf anywhere I At least lust there was none to be seen The Tha ground round was white Do you jou OU OUo order o der that Cubby rubbed his o c- c ca s a s arco 1 F res tines times then sat t and dr tari ty y stared By and by got the best of him He reached out and touched this white covering It was cold and wet Cubby drew back his paw hur hur- hurriedly But after a bit he ventured to reach out and touch it with his tongue He took a little of his t mouth and it became merely water waler I Cubby was more puzzled than ever eer He j didn't know what to make of it all aU Presently Cubby heard the sharp barking of Chatterer the Red Squirrel Then he saw Chatterer frisking about under the trees It was quite quI clear that Chatterer knew all about this queer white substance And it was also quite clear that it was harmless for there was vas Chatterer scampering r 1 P 9 9 H r My 11 goodness be he exclaimed Just look at my footprints across from the foot of one tree to another Cubby stretched Then rather gingerly he walked out It certainly felt queer but it was not altogether unpleasant Cubby walked a little way and looked back My goodness 1 he exclaimed Just look at my footprints 1 I I cant can't step without leaving a print And right there a great thought came to Cubby If he made foot foot- footprints footprints footprints prints like that Mother Bear and his sister would be making footprints too and all he had to do was to find those footprints and follow them Copyright 1927 by T.
