W Burgess Among the things that travel tra fast Youl You'll find bad news Is s never nc last lost Mother West Wind My my my iry It Is astonishing how fast news travels among the little people of ot the Green Forest and the Green Meadows Meadows' In almost almat no time at atall atall atall all everybody for a II long distance nee around knew that one of Buster Blister Bears Bear's cubs was In trouble In the Old Pas Pas- Pasture ture To begin with the sharp eyes of Blacky the Crow discovered that something unusual was going on over there Being blessed with a fair share of curiosity Blacky promptly new flew over o and of course he saw right away that that little cub was caught by one foot Like Mother Bear he supposed the little cub was ms caught in a 0 trap Right night away he began to yell jell ell the news at fit the top of his lungs Of course that brought all his relatives and Sammy Jay and a lot of other feathered folk Old Man Coyote heard the racket and after listening for a 0 few moments started In that direction Come along my dear said he to Mrs Coyote and ind see what Is going on I suspect one 0 c f r ff w wr r Blacky the Crow v and nd md Sammy Jay and the rest of the Crows were secre very ery free with their advise of those young Bears Is In trouble If hes he's In trouble I hope he hell he'll 11 stay in trouble said Mrs Coyote crossly Yes sir I hope h pe just that And I amnot am an annot amnot not In the least Interested In seeing him Ill I'll stay right here thank you rou Old Man ian Coyote chuckled to him him- himself self sell and started off of He tie had gone only a little way when he ran across the fresh scent of Reddy Fox and Mrs Reddy They too were Viere going to see what all the fuss was about Even Peter Rabbit way Vay over In the dear dearOld dearOld Old patch Briar-patch fidgeted about and wished he dared go up there He won won- wondered wondered dered what It was all about So It was vas that In a very ery little while many bright eyes were watching the little cub and Mother Bear Some of the folk foil were ere sorry orry for the little cub and some didn't seem to be sorry at atall all But It Is always that way In the Great World Blacky the Crow and Sammy Jay I and the rest of the Crows were very free with their advice but Old Man Coyote and Reddy and Granny Fox and other little folk who wear weir fur were very careful not to 16 let Mother Bear know that they were rere anywhere about They wanted to see all that was going on and they did dud see but they took particular pains to keep out of sight The news even traveled way down to the Old Orchard and clear over to the pond of Paddy the Beaver deep in the Green Forest Meanwhile the poor little cub had grown quiet His foot had become numb He no longer felt the pain p ln But the fear the dreadful fear was there Just juit the same lame and that he couldn't get rid of Mother Bear was wasat wasat at her e wits wits' ends She didn't t know k ha hae wJ Se ek u what to do If you could have e seen how gently she licked that thit poor little paw and the face fice of the little fel fel- fellow low you jou OU would have understood that I the mother love of a Bear can be as great as the mother love among we e humans After a while even Sammy Jay and Blacky the Crow began b gan to be sorry for the little cub and ond for Mother Bear And all the time tune no noone noone noone one what to do All sorts sort of advice V was shouted to Mother th Bear Bearby Bearby by b the h feathered h flock but b as usual In such cases caces the ad nd advice Ice was not worth listening to The little cubs cub's twin t sister stater s ter was frightened and she whimpered and ond whined until at last Mother Bear could stand It no longer and told her to keep still Finally lIy because she could think of nothing else to do do Mother Bear lay down do beside the thc little caught cub end and did h her r best to comfort him Copyright 1027 1921 by T T.
