B B PETTY Scoutmaster Troop 23 23 ELY COMPARATIVELY few of tho the people of Ogden ani an vicinity have ha avail avail- availEd V I CO ed themselves of the tho privilege of visiting the boy scout camp at the headquarters of South Fork Those who have done so are loud in their praise and nd commendation of the beautiful spot in the mountains to which the boys of the Ogden Gateway council look as their shrine In scouting Those who ho have hae not yet taken taen the opportunity of or seeing Camp Kiesel and Its surrounding canyons have e not availed themselves of ot one of the tho choicest short outings that Is to be ho had In this part of or orthe the country countr The camp closed for this season Monday Monda July 25 after having had In many man respects the most successful term of operation Nearly Neary boys bors have spent a week we or more snore at camp under expert leadership These lads have entered into tub the spirit of this great movement for boys in a away away away way that can only bo be done when associated together In their summer camp In their association there they have hare benefited be physically men menially mentally tally lall and spiritually The life of o a scout camp Is stimulating it is ro roo mantle mantic it provides a guided recreation that returns them to their homes their work and their their various activities built up physically from Crom their out door life stimulated mentally through the courses of of instruction instruction tion given glen by the tile camp leaders who are well welt qualified as Instructors in innumerous innumerouS numerous numerous- fields and it gives to the Uie boys that spiritual uplift that in inevitably comes from Crom contact and greater appreciation of tho beauties and ani wonders of or nature Equally Important in the effects of o life lite at a well conducted boy scout camp amp is the socializing influence e of the boys among themselves They become self reliant seif reliant develop their abilities by participation participation pation In a program that Includes them all and discover as a rule those fine line qualities of or good sportsmanship which enable them to better lives and nod association harmoniously with their fellows These are some of the rewards and profits that come to the boys who attend attend the summer mer camp ca p. p During the present season the camp has been conducted upon two plans Under plan A the scouts havo have been taken to camp where they have lived for a week weel or more under camp rules and regulations They have havo had bad food f od lodgings Instruction and leadership of or camp officials furnished The cost to each Including transportation to and from camp has been per fler week This plan has operated during the first half halfor of or the summer Under plan B. B B Individual troops with their own leaders may maintain and conduct their own camps having with them the scout executives and camp officials of or the tho Ogden council Plan B will willlie willbe be lie conducted during the tho remainder of the tho season FIRST PLAN DETAILS A week at Camp Kiesel during the operation of or A Is a very In in- Interesting and beneficial experience to anyone interested in boys and the scouting movement The camp will comfortably accommodate from 50 BO BOo to o CO 60 boys bos Each boy who attends presents presen's himself with his bedding a physicians physician's certificate of physical fitness and his camp foe Ceo at the KIesel building early eary Monday morning The group Is conducted to camp by motor bus and the first day Is consumed largely In getting situated They arc are divided Into small amaH groups or patrols of seven to nino boys and assigned to a cabin which each cach boy has an individual bunk to sleep In Each patrol by regular vote oto chooses its own officers namo name and totem and Is ready for the activities of the tho week After these preliminary steps are re made mado the remainder of o the afternoon Is spent In group trips to various points in or near camp on which nature work Is taken up under the direction of or camp experts We have been fortunate this season in laving having as regular instructors instructors' and camp leaders in addition to the scout cout executive S. S D. D Young such men able ss rs s Willis Smith and O. O H. H Bybee all of or them exceptionally well qualified not as instructors but butas butas butas as leaders 4 Following the evening meal mea personal Inspection and a formal flag ceremony games are played and the first day in camp ends with a golden campfire around which everyone e in camp sits enjoying the con con- congenial congenial genial spirit toasted marshmallows and the campfire program At 10 p. p m. m m bugle sounds taps and the day closes on sixty tired but happy boys who ho sleep the sleep of or the just under tho the quiet stars and the hushed whisper of the night breeze playing through the fir trees Tuesday morning usually finds a goodly number of boys bors awake long ong before reveille re Sweet memories of that morning bugle Out of or their heir bunks the boys bos come tumbling tumbling half half dressed or entirely so but so-but but it doesn't matter Everyone E gets to the parade grounds and participates In n the flag raising ceremony Then a mad scramble to dress wash and slick up for breakfast Each boy carrying his own dishes which he is solely responsible for or during his stay at camp files into the long dining room room oom of or and there enjoys enjo's to his hearts heart's content cereal cere a chocolate and golden hot lot cakes The meals are excellent Clean well cooked wholesome food provided in well planned menus has resulted in a minimum of ot trouble rouble from changed diet Each patrol has Its turn for or a day at camp duties k p. p etc and does docs it cheerfully STRICT CLEANLINESS Following breakfast and washing of the dishes comes camp cleanup which is conducted as a each cabin of or boys bors being responsible for or the cleanly cleany appearance appearance- appearance of its grounds and Interior Inspection of this work is rigidly rigId I made by camp officers and as the boys become experienced in the ability to clean up their cabins and grounds grow to o be beautiful examples of or neatly kept homes Points for the winners of or these and all contests are jealously guarded by the boys bors of the van vari various ous otis cabins The morning Is usually spent in Instruction and contests Tho The boys learn earn to do 10 leather braiding beading and various other absorbing and profitable projects which develop handicraft and originality The after after- noon program is prefaced by the rest hour and followed by the games short hikes to interesting points games scout test work etc At o'clock comes the hour of or personal inspection again a contest In which the patrol of neatest and cleanest boys bors win the everlasting me forget Oh boy how those fellows scrub comb and slick up l After the announcement of the winning patrol atrol comes the flag ceremony The patrol winning the personal in In- inspection Inspection has the honor of or conducting the flag ceremony the following evening Then comes dinner and what voracious appetites these scouts develop in a surprisingly surprising short time The evening campfire is the crowning event of or each day and patrols vie yle with each other to win the points for the best account of the days day's activities and for the best stunt or act put on Some truly fine ideas are enacted at the campfires HIKE TO PEAK One of the big features of each week we k is the hike to Monte Cristo peak which towers more than 1000 feet teet into the blue Each boy who trio walks to the top and back Is awarded a badge of accomplishment In- In Indeed Indeed deed leed it Is no flO small feat for the trip alone Is more than 12 miles each way As a rule an overnight hike is made of o the affair but on several occasions the hike to the peak and back has been made In la one day The week usually ends with a great field day da devoted entirely to contests games and fun with a great campfire at night and a welcome sounding of taps Sunday the last day da of or camp Is always regarded In la the proper spir- spir spirit it t and usually Includes a short hike to some beautiful spot In Ia this hike Like experiences and inspirational stories are part of the program A brief bu u Impressive scout church service Is conducted In the tha afternoon by the he boys bos Scout activities are all entirely undenominational every scout cout respecting res the religious customs and beliefs of his associates At the final evening flag service the great award council is held To five fhe boys who have havo been by vote of or all nIl the scouts and approval of or camp officials outstanding in their conduct as In n camp are given tho the highest awards of camp the Ca p campfire is the biggest and best of the week and Is one which none who attend It forget Stories stunts reports and songs songs all all of or them dear to the boys boys' hearts hearts and and then as stars twinkle the he canyon breeze softly plays through tho the firs and the aspens to kiss each happy boy goodnight and goodby good b as the bugle blows Day is done Gone the tho sun From the lake
