Show February Swan Song Chronicle Usually most students think of February 1 as just another day assignments and But with the it is indeed a different The traditional change-over in editorial positions and policy marks February 1 as a distinctive Desks are cleaned out time this loose papers are filed away and the editor hems and haws over the final editorial as the swan The past six months as editor of the Chronicle have been very Editing a campus daily newspaper can have its unattractive nights at lost articles and lamenting but these are minute in comparison with the opportunities On the surface the newspaper appears to have only one function in the life of the University informing accurately with the purpose of acting as a student sounding This is partially but much more The newspaper should neither act as an publicity concerned only in serving students with an elaborated calendar of events nor a dull record of committee The newspaper must be the leader in achieving new and unexplored ideas in hopes of stimulating the student to and discuss these It should provide a just sounding board for student i thoughts and In addition the paper must take an editorial expressing and struggling for what it feels is Not everyone has agreed with the policy established this year by the Chronicle not everyone is expected to Some students have felt that too much emphasis has been placed on the facets of the University thereby losing its entertaining Others have felt that the paper stressed outside with political columns and world news to a greater extent than campus I have felt that this policy was the one needed to achieve the purpose of the campus newspaper and I have tried to follow through with With the change-over my congratulations go to Meg Rampton and Joe the new Chronicle editor and managing Meg has always been a hard-working and loyal managing editor with jar-reaching I have no qualms in turning over the paper to her The staff of the Chronicle has been very cooperative carrying through the whatever success or achievement might have been obtained is due largely I sincerely thank Now to paraphrase the sports editor's farewell column Good-bye page two hello LINDA KATHLEEN COVEY |
