' The Utah Apex baseball team of the Copper, Leaguq played its first practice game of the season at Utah , Copper Ball Park Sunday afternoon, """.- winning from the Afl Stars of Salt Lake; City, 11 to 5 in a scn inning affair, "Boob" Burrows started on the mound for the Bingham Canyon contingent con-tingent and showed mid-season form against the Salt Lakers, holding this hard hitting gang to two scattered hits in the four innings .he worked. His curve ball had a beautiful break, while his fast one sizzled, past the visitors so fast they failed to see it. ''Bullet Joe" Russell took Burrows place in the fifth, and was greeted with ome real healthy swats, the vis-itors vis-itors making three markers in this canto, and added two more in the seventh. Elmer Burt, late of the. Garfield team, was the main point for the visitors, vis-itors, and for three innings pitched a nice brand of ball, although he was inclined to be wild. In the fourth " inning he was greeted with a mass of base hits, which coupled with his wildness netted the home team four markers. He gave way to a youngster young-ster by the name of SfcLeese, who fared but little better, being tickled for four runs and four hits in the 6th. The feature of the game was the heavy hitting of Borstadt for the visitors, vis-itors, this slugger gathering four hits in as many trips to the plate, one of his hits being no less than a homer. "Lefty" Fleiger, centerficldcr for the Apex team was the big noise for j the home boys, making two hits in j three trips to the plate and making beautiful catches in the field. For three innings the two teams tered two more. Vith two out, Borstadt Bor-stadt sent a home run to deep center, cen-ter, and then Snow sent a double to the left field fence. L. HERE AND THERE Not so bad for a practice game. The Apex team with Fleiger on its lineup looks 100 per cent better. Although not in mid-season form, the Sliners made a-formidable showing. show-ing. Burrows showed a lot of stuff Sunday, Sun-day, using a nice assortment of curves and when he sent over his fast one, it was "Good Night." Joe Russell pitched good enough, although he was hit rather hard, his team mates helped him out of several difficulties. , Walbeck at short is a real ball player, fielding his position well, and hits the ball hard, although we think he stands too far away from the plate. is a classy proposition, and made several sweet catches. The error charged to him could have been classed class-ed as a hit, although he had both hands on the apple. When it comes to hitting, he takes a real swipe at the ball .and hits it on the snoot. A sweet ball player, says we. Ken Anderson did all that was asked ask-ed of him behind the plate, and used good judgment in calling "of curve balls. It is always well to remember that a catcher does most of the thinking think-ing for a pitcher. Sic Bride is another of last year's team who played nice ball. He cared for the only chance he had, and delivered de-livered with a timely single. Lolo Spencer, playing . manager, scored a hit with, his work in the field, although be failed to get a safe hit. Bosone didn't have an awful lot to do at second, but what he did do he did well. He showed a lot of pep, which is nine tenths of the battle. Snide Taylor, third baseman, miss-ed miss-ed the only chance he had, but big leaguers do that once in a while, so why worry? Snide will come out of it all right. Chiara eaught the. only fly f that came his way- .and connected for a single. , ;, t ' - Borstadt sure hit the pill, and all .his.' hits were cleans i-V.-rSOV- battled on an even footing, neither nine being able to spike the rubber, but in the fourth, the locals start (id a real bombardment. SlcBride opened open-ed the spasm by waiting for the four wide ones ,and went to second ,on a wild pitch. Chiara whiffed the ozone, and then Spencer went out, Stiller to Harbecke, SlcBride going to third. Burrows sent a slow roller down the first base line that went for a single, SlcBride clicking the tinpan with . the r . first run of the game. Taylor singled to second and then I Bosone smashed one at E. Burt, that also went for a single, and the bases were choken. Walbeck walked, forc-j---,, ing in Burrows .and then Burt hit i F'leiger amidships, forcing in Taylor. Anderson walked forcing in Bosone. I SlcBride coming up for the second time in this frame sent a hot shot to center, scoring Walbeck and Fleiger. f This irritated the skipper of the All Stars and he told Elmer Burt to sit 'I on the bench for the rest of the game and see if he could lcarri anything I from Sfr. SfcLeese. Chiara ended I the game by fouling to Harbecke. I The visitors started their hostile i endeavors in the fifth when they k chased three men across. SfcLeese opened by walking to first, and went to third when Fleiger missed Miller's drive to center, Kaufman sent a clean f single to left and SfcLeese and Stiller I - - This fellow Fleiger in centcrficld . tapped the triangle. Kaufman went J to third after Fleiger snagged Har- i becke's long fly to center and scored 1 the third run of the inning on Bor- stadt's hit to center. This was Bor-stadt's Bor-stadt's third straight hit of the game. Nch satisfied with a three run lead, the Apcxers started another melee in the fifth. Spencer was safe when Wilier bubbled his roller, and went to second when Russell sent a clean one to right, and continued around the circuit when Snow let the ball roll to the fence, Russell resting on third. Russell completed the circuit when SfcLeese let a real wild pitch out of -" his system. Taylor went out, L. Burt to Harbecke and then Bosone sent one to short too hot to handle that went for two bases. Walbeck found one that looked good to him, and kissed it up against the right field fence, and before the ball was Recovered, Recov-ered, both he and Bosone had cleared clear-ed the paths. Fleiger sent a hot shot, to right, and went to second when " Anderson walked. Again Bill Kauf man declared this was too much and told SIcLeese to take short while L. Burt went to the box. McBride whiffed, whif-fed, and then Burt hit Chiara, but the side was retired when Spencer forced Chiara at second, SfcLeese to Miller. The sncth added another for the honr team. Russell started with a t Jkffah hto left, and both hands were safe whe Burt made a bad throw on Taylor's f ttempted sacrifice. Bosone went out Harbecke- unassisted, and both runnys advanced a base.
