Show DO N UR EK ns F 0 W L K FUL S RMON DELIVERED AT THE ST JOSEPHS CHURCH text the ascension of our lord seating beating capacity of the edifice again taxed stev father donoher preached a very eloquent and interesting sermon last evening at tho the catholic church using as his ills text 1 I believe in the holy ghost the holy catholic church the of saints the forgia enness of sins and life everlasting father pat her donoher is an orator and his ermon termon t f was excellent and straight to the point and his reasoning very clear and easy to grasp ills talk was filled with strong arguments and punctuated occasionally I 1 casio nally by apt ox examples ample t and incidents from life that served to more clearly place before befaro his hearers just what his line of argument was briefly stated the following artre some of the strong arguments given by father donoher A man haa stood at tho the open grave and watched the earth close around the mortal remains of one he lie dearly loves began father Do donoher nolier and heartsick heart sick and discouraged he turna turns his footsteps homeward and to a life that seems impossible without the companion that he has just buried then the old familiar work ia is resumed listlessly at first but as time grows on he takes heart and works steadily along building up his business until he has come to be looked up to and respected in the community in which he resides then suddenly a fire comes and destroys all again he is discouraged and plunged into despair but he says to himself 1 I believe in life everlasting and starts to work to again build up his business he ile bears a good name in tho the community is looked up to and respected by everybody anat knows him and his cami company pany is sought for but one day an enemy makes a backbite backbit ing remark a calumny against the roans mans fair name and then he finds that he Is shunned by his friends who had yesterday hunted him up and sought his acquaintance for a time he lie cannot understand but soon it dawns upon him that some person has attacked his good name behind bis his back and that ho he is now under suspicion Is it any wonder that under these conditions revenge takes hold bold of him and that he looks to a revolver to end it all but there he stops for he believes in life everlasting take the gambler who has lost his last penny and is desperate or the drunkard who wakes up to find his serious condition with a scared wife and children dren gathered around what prevents these men from taking their own awn lives ives their belief in a life everlasting it would not bo be reasonable forme for me to try to prove to this intelligent audience that there is a life beyond the grave it would bo be absurd for me to even attempt to enove to you that there is something within us that cannot and will not die we learn lean this lesson in the first lessons of 0 our ur childhood wo we felt tho the truth AS wo we advanced in years and wo we proved this truth from the time that our conscience told us that we haj had committed a mortal sin dust thou art and unto dust ret urnest was wab not spoken of tho the soul we are told in tho the scriptures that on one occasion a rich young man hastened to the side of our savior jesus christ and asked him this question quentio n good master faster what good can I 1 do that I 1 may have life ev everlasting er I he ite te asked this question not knowing that ho lie was speaking to christ and our lord replied if if tho thou 11 wilt enter life avei lasting keep the commandments you say there distio is no hell and I 1 answer 6 you yott by asking what becomes of the II wicked ckel people who have a v majority aro are they to sit with god an and d the fit blessed finessed essed virgin and the saints in heaven certainly n not ot good and bad cannot exist together christ tells tell us in st lukes gospel first thero there is a place called hell bell secondly the plue called hell is a place ot of torment thirdly the torment of hell is caused by fire and aad fourthly the life in hell is everlasting this following extract will not only be found in the catholic but in all protestant bibles also there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day and there was a certain beggar named lazarus who lay at his gato gate full of sores desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich mans mails table and no olle one did give him moreover the doga dogs come and licked his sores and lf IC camo came to pass that the beggar dle dand was carried by the angels into abrahams bosom and the rich man also died and he was burled buried in hell and lifting up his eyes when he was vas in torments he saw abraham afar oft off and lazarus in his ills bosom and he cried and an daid paid father abraham have morey on me and send lazarus that ho he may dip the tip of his ills finger in water to cool tool my tongue for I 1 am tormented in this flame and abraham said to him son remember that thou receive good things in thy lifetime and likewise lazarus evil thing 3 but now ho he is comforted and andi you are tormented led it la Is not tho the fact of a man mail having vest wealth that will vill cause him to damn hla his sou soul but ut the manner in which he be uses that wealth there should be more charity in the world and a man who has 11 not 0 t charity has not much opportunity y to enter heaven 1 father Do donoher nolier took occasion to se verely denounce the manner in which our theaters are imari aged today that men and women take their children to see playa that are immodest for the reason that women wear tights and ot of scenes scones that are suggestive of something immoral he said that the playa plays should be elevated 41 1 I was in chicago said father donoher Donoh cr at the time of the terrible iroquois disaster and the fire broke out in one of the most hellish scenes that was ever staged tell me your company and I 1 will telf you what you are coutin continued uM the reverend father the young man ia IS known by the company ho lie keeps also the young woman you are in bad company when you go to a play that Is suggestive for the reason that you are yourself your closest companion and these plays suggest bo to you things that are immoral and you allow them to run through throng h your mind the speaker was very bittor bitter in his condemnation of arth artl tic itic or what is generally considered as artistic pictures in honas god help the man or woman that has to answer for the damsat damnation 10 n of their children because they have kept in their homes pictures that suggest to the youthful minds things that are immoral ChIld children reli that aro are dearel beare very keep the commandments impurity is to the most horri horrible blo sin of all hell is filled with impure people we have the sins of the eye in looking at bad and immodest pictures aing of the hearing of very plainly and gave some soule very excellent advice for all his ills sermon was listened to with agrest a great deal of interest and created a profound impression we turn our eyes toward the altar and see tho cross and we realize what our lord did for us in dying on the cross he speaks to each heart and oven even though the sins be as numerous as the sands of tho the seashore they will be forgiven if the sinner is truly penitent and sorry for his or her sins hero here wo we have faith we wo have all sin nod but it if we are sorry for our sins they can be forgiven father donoher
