Show A filthy condition of the stock yards a menace to public health complaint lias been received by THE of the execrable condition of the stock corral down in yards north of twenty fourth street it was found upon investigation that alie yards arc inde edin a most loathsome condition the bloated and carcasses of several cheep from which an intolerable stench which is a menace to the health and perhaps lives of people living and working in that section 0 the city are scattered about on the fronton front of the corral this matter should receive the immediate attention of of the health officers the filthy condition of the stockyard itself should also receive attention borne of the corrals are covered to a depth of one foot or more with a slushy malodorous muck for the existence of which there c n bo no reasonable excuse because the natural facilities for drainage drain aee could not be improved upon it is reported that stockmen stoc kmen aud shippers very discreetly refuse to have cattle driven into such a mud puddle tena of thousands of cattle cheep and harfes are shipped east through ogden every year and shippers knowing tho present condition of the stockyards stock yards would not be likely to immerse their stock therein instead aliey go on to salt lake and rest feed and water their animals there which means a bie loss to ogden in the one item of hay alone steps should at once be taken to establish a reputation for the oden stockyard As a measure of public safety ai well as of profit flioy should be drained of the fluid filth and the corpses of those rotting sheep should receive at least a superficial interment or perhaps better still for the cremator be incinerated since the above was set up sanitary inspector major has been seen and to have the dead sheep removed and the whole matter so far as sanitation is concerned attended to educational department this is the first installment of a series of educational notes which will appear in ana STAND hereafter each thursday the editor has undertaken this task although out of the line ot hia regular employment kever having engage J in literary pursuits he may lay himself open to criticism from a literary and et orical standpoint but that can do no hiarm since the writer for the present at least prefers to remain unknown having been engaged in teaching in in years gone by it will seem good to be again identified with the school work though in a different way the objects of aliis department are first to set forth and discuss recent educational doctrines and principles second to give all the items of public interest in connection with the schools of incidentally of the other schools of utah third to bring the public by every means possible in closer touch with the schools in america everything goes with a rush this is in marked contrast to the rule in england and other older countries the effects of this is seen in education we complot oin three years a course that in england ordinarily ex arda over four or five years the english student goes along leisurely and gets what he studies thoroughly tho american rushes at his work a vim that sometimes results in breaking down his health at school the american student sets the guiding stakes iu practical life he fills in the blank spaces how otten ia it said that the graduate thinks ho knovs all that intended man to know and that experience teaches him how little ho really does know Is it not a fact that teachers in intenzo anxiety to see rapid progress atlen expect too much of the child do not teachers sometimes forget that the growing mind ia more easily fatigued thin the mature mind the arrangement of the program may do much to prevent fatigue by inter the more difficult studies such as arithmetic grammar and geography uliter mechanical studies such as drawing music spelling etc for much of the weariness and inattentiveness inattentive nesa in the schoolroom the teachers are responsible while the blame falls upon the unfortunate child no person ever etu lied a subject unless there was in it something t him perhaps tho interest lay in that at sometime it could be made useful puff san we expect children to fully realize the utility of something comes into play go far in the future now these are practical questions think about them the rues for discipline of teachers for professional negligence are beine strictly enforced it is scarcely probable that any teacher will in alio future run the risk of temporary or permanent suspension by exposing pupils to contagious diseases the bulei in respect cannot be too strictly enforced dr whiting lias a good fund of ready original wit and humor in his lecont lecture before the teachers of ogden lie remarked after placing a drawing on the board to represent the digestive apparatus of the cow that the drawing did not look exactly like alie real object abr if it did the cow would die hia statement passed without contradiction S 0 0 B road had a narrow escape from being victims of a terrible accident last night As the train started out of the elizabeth station the axle connecting the two rear driving wheels of the engine snapped and the heavy engine wa wrecked when an investigation waa made it was discovered that the steel axle which is about eight inches in diameter bad snapped off close to the right hand driver and that an old flaw was in the steel so that thus the heavy engine had run no one knows how long depending upon one fifth of the axle a piece about BIX inches thick in the center the train consisted of from eight to ten heavily loaded cars and runs to elizabeth in twenty two minutes at express speed without stops railroad men upon viewing the wrecked engine were astounded at the miraculous escape the train had had from a terrible catada for as an old engineer said had that small piece of axle given way while the train wag making its run from jersey city to elizabeth drawbridge duri it runs nearly a mile a minute there would have occurred one of the most terrible accidents that has ever occurred in tuia section of the country As you can see from the condition of the engine as she lies the sudden collapse of that axle and the spread of the drivers would have piled the engine and her lone train in a heap before you could say jack robinson I 1 tell you what boys that is one of the closest shaves I 1 ever saw in my experience the train had stopped at elizabeth station unloaded the Elizabeth 1 passengers and biad just started out for dun nellen the engine having passed over the union street bridge when the break occurred the wheela had just before struck the point of switch and the sudden jolt thus occasioned is supposed to have caused the weak axle to give way tha track was
