Show TRUMBO WILL NOT BOLT will stay in the convention to the end unless all the utah Dale sates wa k out after the convention he will be free to act fop silver ana protection southern hotel st louis mo june 17 special to THE gave out the following signed statement tonight while I 1 do not intend to vote the republican ticket on a gold platform I 1 do net feel that it is my place to walk out of tho convention there ara many republicans in utah who do not want to walk out of the party and aa long as one man remains in the ranks I 1 feel that it will be my duty to stay in the convention it is my place to remain and represent the republicans 1 I am for silver above all else and have worked as hard as or harder than any other man to see that the republican party was induced to take a positive stand either for or against silver the attitude they have assumed is against my principles and inimical to the interests of my country child I 1 have to fight this question out wiship party lines and represent the party which was kind enough to honor me by making me a delegate dele sate I 1 will remain in my seat to the end but when it is over I 1 will be free to aci and those who know me know that I 1 will be for frea silver and protection carter will not bolt st louis june 17 senator carter of montana is no longer one of the insurgent senators alis associates senators teller dubois and cannon made plain their positions wore the resolutions committee and what course senators carter and mantle would pursue has been u matter of general interest the former this afternoon notified the silver doeu that be could not go with them and that if they bolted and left the convention and the republican party they must do eo without him mr mantle has not yet notified his colleagues to the bame effect but will probably do so tomorrow morning manley on me flank mr J H manley made the following st atamant ate mant tonight the eastern republicans have won a great victory in this convention in forcing the convention to accept and declare for the maintain ance of the gold standard the delegates from the new england states from new york from new jersey from pennsylvania and it should be said to their credit from some of the extreme northwestern states demanded that the money question should be met squarely and the issue presented fairly and honestly to the people they insisted that the resolutions should explicitly declare against the free coinage of silver except by international agreement with the leading nations of the world that the present gold standard should bo maintained they did not care what else was said provided the convention was emphatic in its expressions upon these two main points the party lias taken a stand for the right no matter aliat the result may ba but in this case to ba right will be popular THE VICE presidency belief grows thai borlon Is willing to accept it the corridors of the southern hotel were filled tonight with vice presidential gossip it is openly asserted at new york and it ia believed by politicians generally that governor morton will accept the nomination if the convention decides to honor him with the second place the platt men in tho new york delegation do not agree in their respecting governor marions Mo rions chances ardent morton men such as congressman quige for example believe ho will bo nominated mr lauterbach Lant erbach ia noncommittal non committal and declines to be quoted but he id apparently parent ly of mr mind there are other of the platt men however who either profess ignorance of governor mortons Mor tons prospects or who sadly admit that the outlook is not encouraging on one point all tho new ore agreed they will not present tho governors name unless they are certain of his success aney do not intend as one of their number expressed tonietti to put morton up a second time to be knocked down mr quigg says there are morton votes in mr lauterbach eliat after the silver men shall have bolted abo convention tomorrow the exact number of delegates remaining will be of which are feces B ary te a choice if the figures pre dented by governor mortona friends are correct he will win by bare majority it mr luterbach Lat erbach estimate 13 realized the anti morton borcea do not see how the new york governor can secure sufficient strength to land him a winner they concede him the delegates arom maine and rhode island all but of new york one third of ohio one halt of the missouri delegation all but five in pennsylvania all in michigan and a scattering vote in a number of other states they will not concede him more than votes at the utmost HOB MITS CHANCES an effort has been made to hold the mckinley contingent in line to be voted as a unit for mr hobart of new jersey he ie the choice of the ohio men and of a considerable number of mr mc Kin leys followers in other delegations and there are many shrewd political observers who believe that the new jersey man will be nominated the friends of gov bulkeley of connecticut are making an earnest canvass in bis behalf and mr H clay evans of tennessee is still hopeful that the convention will turn to a doubtful southern stale for its vice president there was an informal conference ot leading members of the nebraska dela gation tonight tonie ht to consider the desirability 0 holdine a caucus on the vice presidential nomination the decision reached was that each delegate should be permitted to exercise his own preference in the convention and that no attempt should be made to bind the delegates to any one candidate jhn L webster chairman of the delegation said later 1 I do not think governor morton will get a single vote from nebraska some of our people are for general hobart and others for henry clay avans the latter I 1 think ia the favorite it was reported about the hotels tonight that word had gone out from the mckinley headquarters that general hobart had been definitely agreed upon as the ohio mans mate and while people close to mr hanna denied that this v as a fact it was noticeable that many of the mckinley people in different delegations notably illinois who had hitherto been reticent concerning the second place on the ticket were advocating the new jersey mans claims friends of H clay evans of tennessee were emphatic in their declarations that the managers express no preference but would allow their delegates to manifest their own proclivities unfettered A FREE FOR ALL it ICE an eastern politician who has the pulse ol 01 many oi the delegations said at 10 pm it looks to me that general is as far away from the gaal as governor morton I 1 think it will be a free for all race tomorrow it ia probable that on the first ballot for vice president the twenty four votes of virginia will be catt solidly for general james A walker as a to that distinguished hero 0 the confederacy after that has been done it is claimed the vote will be almost unanimous for mr morton it his name should be placed in nomination with mr morton not a candidate mr hobart of new jersey is expected to get about twenty out of the twenty four votes A CLOSE SECOND the illinois delegation cau cussed tonight to consider the vice domination many of the members expressed themselves favorable to gea II obart henry clay evans was a close second while ex governor bulkley ol 01 connecticut had several friends it was ultimately decided to appoint a committee af three beaded by ex gov arnor piter to sound the eastern and southern delegations concerning their preferences and report tomorrow tomor rov afternoon resolution against mob violence st louis june 17 mr H A rucker one ef tha colored delegates at larga from georgia introduced into the convention today the following borders further that we protest against treatment received by a portion ot the to this national convention by the city of st louis and that this national convention instructs the national committee not to accept an invitation vi from any city that does not guaranty e to every delegate fair and equal treatment lostro discredits published platform Plat lorm senator henry cabot lodge say s the text of tho platform as published in some of the morning papers with tho exception of the financial plank which was given out by the committee was a hodgepodge hodge podge and did not represent the platform in tho manner it purported to do the publication said mr lodge consisted of the raw material that was submitted to us and from which we constructed the platform jh day at canton canton 0 june 17 an animated and enthusiastic gatherine ot newspaper people and of friends of the latter mostly ladies who came in to sit with mr mckinley received and discussed the today t major mckinless McKin leys residence the major him belf wae outwardly calm and gracious as mutual but the alanm upon him incident to the situation at times itself in his eyes the only expression he gave of the nervous tension to which he was strung the result of the ato upon ordering the previous question on the report of the committee on credentials creden tiala was received by him with manifest satisfaction although aa has been his wont he refrained from making the slightest comment upon it the question of most interest was as to the time the nomination would be made but all the one most interested would say was that st louis ought to havo the convention at least three days in the course of the afternoon maj mckinless McKin leys venerable mother came over from her own home to be with her ow As soon as be baw her t the gate some yards from the front porch major mckinley left his company with the there is my mother and with bis hat uplifted he gaye her bis arm and escorted her into the honse although 87 henrs old mrs mckinley bears herself with vigor takes a deep interest in all that concerns her son and her pride and enjoyment in his success are delightful to see ex congressman john S wise of new york and murat halstead the veteran newspaper man came to canton this afternoon why there was no biehl session st louis june IT sanator thurston said tonight the intimation that a night session of the convention was not desired by the powers in control was brought to me but a couple of before I 1 recognized congressman grosvenor to move an adjournment until tomorrow morning I 1 do not think that the complications in the committee on rules over the money plank had anything to do with the matter As it was represented to me the people of st louis were anxious to bring off the big parade tonight and had there been a night session the outside show would have been a fizzle we owe to st louis and hence it was considered as only the fair thing to accede to the pressure from the business men and others and let them have the night to themselves alc mckinley parade the big mckiney parade tonight though delayed by a thunderstorm came off eventually there were a very large number of clubs in line and the display was as effective as abundance of red tire good music numerous banners and mckinley pictures and cheers and general enthusiasm could make it A new march composed for the occasion was played with success me morion mr dand other anti men in the new york delegation are still of the opinion that sir platt will endeavor to bring about the nomination ot governor morion for the vice presidency mr and has received the following Horn ellaville K Y jane 17 john E Milho liand southern hotel st louis A thousand registered mckinley republicans protest against the nomination of morton for vice president L W president he has also received a letter from thomas fortune the well known colored leader in which he says 1 I am opposed to the nomination of governor morton as vice president because of his position aalice president on the lodge federal elections bill and because as governor of new york ho has done nothing to indicate that he would do anything to accord to afro americana any considerations upon any supplementary looking to the conservation of their rights under the con slit ution as the presiding pres idine officer of the senate 1 I do not believe that governor marions Mo rions sympathies are with the broad sentiment underlying the war amendments to the federal constitution or that his managers from long years of close relationship indulge such sentiments and I 1 do not that he should be nominated as vice president florida democrats ocala fla june 17 the eight delegates from florida will go to chicago uninstructed in the state convention tonight the committee on platform made two reports the majority recommended the financial question to the chicago convention the minority report signed by twenty two ot the members of the resolutions committee declared for free bilter the minority report then voted down to and the majority report was adopted by the same vote |
