and elated that the of the meeting was to divide some means whereby could be a building to contain the chamber of commerce rooms and offices and at the same time sene for edons new opera house ame little time ago a number of petit conrd the city council for the of feet frontage of union square tor the purpose of erecting fuch a building the city council hal resolved to sell that much land to the highest bidder who would purchase it on the condition tint he would erect euca a structure as tint by ahe original petitioners petition ers it was to look more tally into this matter be stated and to aea what coorsh should now be pursued as to ec curina the aronni that the meeting waa to be held architect was present and be cave he dimensions of the plans which he bad suggested in order to give the meeting something to work on aa to the size red the building will be so arranged arr aneed that the opera house instead of g the length of the tt rudure will take in the width of the building that IP it one hundred feet ot frontage ii i i obtained the opera house proper will be that lonn auditorium and braie included while the width would probably be about 65 feet As this was not considered quite enough a number of were made as to the proper eize and af a matter of the amount of land to be ee cured from the city frank J cannon asked whether it was intended to form a company among the citizens for the erection of this structure when told that that bad been the intention he suggested that it would be much bet tir to keep the enterprise enter prize within the chamber as a purely chamber of commerce project it would be difficult be ea d lo 10 control and properly dee agnate the interests in the building unless each was made the case this suggestion the chair slated that if the land was for the amount of money which they expect ed to offer ab ut was all that would be needed to ecart the project and this lie thought could be raised among the members ninety members of the chamber ought to ba able to raise that amount among themselves and he therefore favored favor cd thelded of making it a chamber of commerce enterprise whereby they would cot only be gaining prest iee and influence but would benefit the city as a corporation and the public in general then came up the question of the size of the laca on motion ot A II 11 nt laon it was decided that the council should be asked to sell the southwest quarter of the square which with street and albrys provided for would leave a p ece of land feet squire on the corner of washington avenue sixth the sum offered for the land to be HOO on the question of the purchase money it waa thought that tb re would be much objection the city had voted to tell the land or at least ehilt portion of the square as previously asked for to the adler find it was not likely that it was offered for the game piece that the city would accept A number of members expressed themselves on this point very pointedly and clearly it was shown that it the city sold the land now tar that would be the end of the matter with the exception of euch improvements prove ments us the buyers would of their own accord choose to put on the land if bold to the chamber af commerce for the specific purpose of erecting a house of the eize and cost named and for the purpose making that a condition of the purchase the land adjoining such a building would then sell for where now it would not bring more than liala that eum by that iran action the city would reap the same b neat in a pecuniary sense the chamber would secure for it an excellent commerce building and the pubic would have the long sought fir opera house there was nothing to be lost in adv sense by selling the desired land to the chamber fur alo and there was everything to be gained another point walh was favorable for the eale was the fact that all the revenues accruing frum this building would revert to the chamber of by it they would be expended in the furtherance of every project that would build ap the town increase ane population and the values of property and thereby increase the city revenues which would be but alie predecessor to increase public improvements prove ments it would assist in building up the tow n and as there would be no pecuniary loss from the start it would be a profit to all by the gale of his property for the purpose aforesaid afier thoroughly discussing these points the cleir appointed a corn cittee consisting of frank J cannon don maguyre Magu lre J II 11 klauka to draw up a petition to the ally coanell for the purchase of the lind now decided on and to present in the cleared t terms ros dible all the advantages accruing irom a granting of the petition mr cannon bated that as he was not in favor of the project involving tho division of union equale not art on raid committee alie chair then the name of wen driver this committee decided to meet tills mornion at ten and formulate the and embody in it all these points and present it at the meeting of the city council this evenin e alie chamber meeting adjourned having successfully accomplished lie for which 11 was called the action of alie city council will be watched with interest but as the rights of the taxpayers are not considered to be injured but rather furthered by the eale and some of the conn ril being in favor of it there were
