Show THE OF OFFICE the city council disposed ot the block division and street narrowing proportions at session on friday evening with startling promptness the summary method by which they placed the merits of tho question beyond discussion and the reason v kiich was given are even more singular and surprising than the fact that the troublesome issue have been thus neatly evaded it was stated that the council already had BO much work on hand and eo many irons in the fire that it was deemed impracticable to undertake any action on this important matter and eo the resolution was tabled indefinitely if any question which may be pre f dented to the council whether of great or minor importance can be laid aside because that body is too busy to consider it the voters cannot be charged with disrespect if they inquire what the members of alie council understand their duties and obligations to be and oath of office to mean the gentlemen who the municipal government are elected with the understanding that so much of their time as may be necessary will be devoted to the public service and that to the performance of their duties aliey w ill bring their best lodgment and the utmost diligence if this was not expectation they should have declined the honor of a nomination we are forced to consider the lack of time referred to as being the lack of time winch the members feel to devote to public business if it w ere not BO the question under discussion might have been postponed to conio up in its order and the matters preceding it were disposed of it would come before the house if it should be found that unfinished business was on the increase more frequent or more lengthy sessions would furnish an easy method of reducing the docket hence it looks like an impossibility for the council as an official body to make valid the excuse that it baa more business before it than it can attend to the cares and responsibilities of office make the honor not al ways the pleasure which it is expected to be there is usually much work fur little pay and less credit than criticism but this ought to be considered as well batore as ader the election in the case of the present council all admit that alicy have transacted a great amount of business aliey have held more meetings than any of their predecessors and their sessions have been longer but they were keen to begin and in their anxiety to grapple with the questions before the public they scarcely waited till tue sounds of jollification over their victory died away before they grasped the reins of power thankful as we believe aliey will be to return to private hence they huelit not to be weary of public labor thus early in career they are mostly gentlemen of leisure and can afford to give their time to the good cause even if they were not their duty to their constituents and their oath of affied leave them no alternative they to havo time for everything which comes before them in an official capacity |
